Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was great to visit this atmospheric institution, not only for the plentiful information available but also because of its lengthy history.

Established in the late 1500s for the indigent and destitute of the city, a service it continued to provide until the early 1800s.

By the way, the staff told us that the Information Office is imminently relocating to new premises. They didn’t know what role this evocative building will have in the future.

We stopped here to get a town map as well as ask a few questions and the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, I did find it odd and inconvenient that there isn't a public restroom in this building.

Stopped in to get some information on the city attractions. Staff very welcoming and helpful and we ended up with abundant maps and literature to show us locations and provide background details of the various sites. As we only had one day, we were offered suggestions for the primary sites to visit and the extras in between. An asset to the city. The old building that currently houses the Office, Shee Alms House, dates to 1582.

Even if you do not need a map or directions you must stop into this tourist information office because of the history of its building. The building has survived from 1582 intact. It was run by the Shee family as a poor house and if you cannot afford to go into the Rothe House close by, this is a free opportunity to see what a house from the 15th century looked like. In fact Richard Shee was the nephew of John Rothe who built the Rothe House in 1594. Shee Alms House is slightly older (1582). Shee believed in caring from the poor but women and men could not intermingle or marry. It helped during the 19th century potato famine. He was so staunchly committed to keeping the house as an alms house that he threatened his family with a curse if they did not comply with keeping it as a bastion for the poor. Shee is buried on the other side of the stone wall opposite the house.

The office is in an old work house and is pretty interesting to visit. The staff really helped orient us not only for our time in Kilkenny but also the rest of our week in Ireland. Thanks!
