Interesting glimpse into the world of Irish Ale
I got lucky to be the only participant of the tour guided by Adam. Even though it was a little awkward to get a private tour just for me, I learned a lot of things, especially about the influence of politics on the business of beer brewing. I got a good insight into the Smithwicks family and really liked the multimedia part of the tour where portraits of family members are brought to life. During the beer-related part of the tour I learned new things about the history of the brewing process, the different ingredients of Irish Ale and brewing techniques. There was also the opportunity to taste test the different ingredients to get a better understanding of what the taste of beer comes from. Since the ticket price (20 €) included a pint of Smithwicks in a bar at the end of the exhibition, I got to enjoy some Red Ale before leaving the brewery. I really liked the experience and would absolutely recommend it, even though it is a little pricey for a 50 min tour. Also it has to be pointed out that you're not able to see the actual brewing facilities, since the production has been moved to another place due to space reasons. For those wanting to try different beers, there is a special ticket that costs a few Euros more but you get 3 glasses of different beers to try after the tour.

    Enjoyable.
Enjoyable tour. I’ve done it now and would not do it agin. Robert our guide was helpful and friendly. It only takes 45 minutes and you get a pint at the end or for an extra €3 you can try a half pint of all 3 ales. We went on a quite day as he mentioned they get lots of stag parties. Tours run every hour.
Hi, Thanks so much for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your tour with Robert. Feel free to visit us again next time you’re in Kilkenny. Deirdre Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny

    Quite a treat
I was able to go through on the 2nd day it was re-opened—16 July, 2022. Adam was our guide for our small group of 5 and he did a lovely job. I supposed considered one way it may seem a little corny (for example, some portraits talk), but in all honesty, it worked for me! From the smells of fermenting barley to the tasting room (tasking barley, roasted barley, and yeast if you want to, I guess…) Adam made the story of medieval Ireland, the Smithwick family, and the brewing process come alive. And it didn’t hurt to have a pint (or a paddle!) at the end of the tour. All in all, I think the experience was well worth the cost.

What a great experience! An intimate guided tour with a great historical overview, technical descriptions of how the beer is made, and a wonderful little tasting room with various Smithwick’s (and Guiness Open Gate Brewery) beers on tap, one pint of which is included. The guide we had was great. If you’re passing through Kilkenny in addition to Dublin, skip the Guiness tour and do this one instead. You won’t be disappointed!

Tour starts right from when monks started brewing beer in Kilkenny 700 or so years ago through to the present day. Very good tour guide Emma made it really interesting. Good descriptions of the family history as well as the science of brewing beer. Let down was to discover the beer is now brewed in Dublin so none of the equipment is actually working. This means the great smells of a working brewery are absent which is a real shame. They need to add artificial smells to their very clever a/v presentations.

The upgrade to the three beers tasting option is a must if you are a beer affectionado.

This is the only brewery tour we did and it was interesting, the family behind the brand and how they make it. The tour guide and staff were kind and engaging. It was fun to sit in their bar after and have a drink.
