About
A magnificent 17th century Irish merchant's townhouse & garden in the centre of Kilkenny city. We are open as a museum with artifacts collected by Kilkenny Archaeological Society and feature a splendid garden which has been restored as a 17th century urban garden. Step back in time and see, smell and taste what the Rothe family experienced. We also provide genealogical services and you can browse our book and gift shop.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our tour bus took us to Kilkenny for a couple of hours. Our guide Elizabeth suggested we visit this house and garden and we're so glad she did. The house is an incredible museum showing what life was like back in the 17th century. And the gardens are magnificent. Highly recommended!

The garden is the star of this little piece of history in Kilkenny. It is fun to see how someone more ordinary lived in the past, rather than just the local lord. I hope they are able to continue work on the house to bring it up to the level of the garden.

We enjoyed our tour with Sinead as she took us through, learning the history of the house and the people who lived there. Although you can do a self guided tour, I think you get a lot more information on the guided tour. Looking from the street we assumed it was one house, but surprised to find that they built two more houses further back, with beautiful gardens behind those. Don't miss the gardens out back! Was interesting to learn more history about this area. Even found a great book, Pocket History of Ireland in their bookstore.

So much history in one building! The guided tour with Sean is well worth it and you learn more than just reading exhibits. The walled gardens are beautifully tended.

Rothe House in Kilkenny is a medieval merchant townhouse from the 16th century that has been sympathetically restored by the Irish Archaelogical Society. Go on the guided tour as you get a lot more information than doing a self-guided tour. There are 3 separate buildings with courtyards in between. There are a lot of stairs that you will need to climb to be able to see the 3 floors. The thing you must not miss on the tour is seeing the amazingly reconstructed and beautiful walled garden at the back, which was excavated from below the concreted car park. Definitely worth making an effort to visit while in Kilkenny city.

A lovely oasis in the middle of Kilkenny!
My husband and I were given a hugely informative tour by Sean and we were pleasantly surprised with all the interesting history. From Cromwell to De Valera, Sean knew it all and handled any questions with ease. The walled garden is a lovely space and offers a nice reprieve from the hustle and bustle of KK. I couldn’t recommend it enough!

We were staying in Kilkenny for two days and decided to do the tour of Rothe house. We booked a guided tour. It was brilliant. The guide was excellent she was very knowledgable and so pleasant. You could tell she loved her job. Very interesting tour. The gardens were in great condition considering it was only the start of spring. Will definitely go back in the summer to see the garden in full bloom.

Went in on spec having been intrigued by the building walking by. We were just on time for the start of a tour and being a chilly February day the tour consisted of the two of us. The tour guide was Sean and he really knows his stuff. He was friendly and engaging and willing to put up with my questions. Really interesting story behind the walls and garden. Being February the garden wasn't going to be looking it's best but I imagine in Spring and Summer it's stunning. A rare find, glad we did it.

We did a self-guided tour of the house which didn't impress us. However, my family (children and adults) loved the garden. They also really appreciated that the garden had been restored from a concrete car park. In February there were a few spring flowers.

Lovely house and beautiful gardens. Well thought out historical information shared, wonderful period clothing, and other artifacts. I was the only one in the house and garden and it was so peaceful!

How much time would you allot to visit the Rothe House and Garden?

Allow 1-2 hours, that should be sufficient, but if you are on a whirlwind tour like a lot of Americans who come here, see the castle first, enjoy the touristy shopping mall opposite the castle, the high street and the Cathedral with round tower, before you go in here. That's my opinion.
Have a great time whatever you do.
