Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Staff were absolutely amazing and knowledgeable about the jails history. They recommend a great restaurant for us too. Overall it was a great experience.

This is really a very large old building that used to be the jail and courthouse. It sits right downtown in Kilkenny centre. There is a plaque to the left of the building that explains it's history. Make sure you read it.

A long and eventful history is one of the sterling attractions of this imposing construct. A vista from across the street viewing its full profile is marvellous.
Originally the site of a castle in the 1200s it underwent various changes down the centuries. It has long been the location for a jail and a courthouse was instigated in the latter half of the 1700s.
It continues to serve as a courthouse.

The courthouse was previously Grace's Castle, erected in 1210 as a townhouse for the wealthy Grace family. It was converted to a prison in 1566 and became the courthouse in 1792. Heady history, but unfortunately we had to make do with viewing the front as the building and the modern additions behind are used for sittings of the Circuit and District Courts.

This is one of the stops on the ghost tour. The history of the building is informative when you have a good guide. Thanks "joe"

It was delight to see so many of the old buildings in this city, the history is amazing and they have been well maintained for the age of them.

I would love if this was more accessible and more information available about it. It has a plaque outside but I think that the walls could tell far more given this buildings varied history. It is so accessible in terms of its location that i think it could be made far more of.

Stories make the building interesting. We passed by the building on our first walk, but returned after reading and hearing more stories about it.

This is right on the low road and dates back centuries. In spite of the age it is still in use and is interesting to see.
