Kilkenny Castle was a must on our castle to-do list. Very large and imposing exterior, a blend of different styles from medieval onwards. The tour is self-guided. There is a hint of medieval in the first part of the tour in the Undercroft, but the majority of the interior is furnished in the styles of the 19th century. The wallpaper... More

Kilkenny is a great Irish town and anyone who wants to see a historic and beautiful small Irish city, with lots of shops and restaurants, should spend a day here. Towering over the city and at a bend in the river is the Kilkenny Castle, where the Butler family ruled over Kilkenny for about 700 years. The castle itself is... More

My boyfriend and I loved the outside of the castle and the grounds, but the inside of the castle was decorated for the 1800's and was a disappointment because we thought it would all still be original. It's worth the trip to see the outside! It's a challenge to find a parking spot, but there are TONS of shops and... More

The castle is interesting and the tour takes about 45 minutes. Be sure and spend a little time walking the trails around the back side of the castle park.

When you are visiting Kilkenney, make sure you take the time to walk into town and visit the Kilkenny Castle. If you plan on visiting other historic attractions throughout Ireland, take Rick Steve's advice and purchase a Heritage card. This was the best purchase our entire trip and saved us (a family of 6) money on entrances to several attractions... More

The castle itself is very beautiful and a pleasure to walk around. I don't enjoy guided tours, so I liked that this was more self-guided. However, it would have been nice to have more description about life in the castle pre-1800. As we were walking through, I felt that it was not much different from other Victorian residences I've toured.... More

Kilkenny Castle has an incredibly interesting history... however the castle doesn't tell you anything about it! They hand out a self guide sheet but a tour guide would be more suitable - they could probably make it a bit more interesting. It took us about 20 minutes to tour the few rooms on show here, the majority are either under... More

We loved the drive out to Kilkenny from Dublin and loved this town. I wish we would have skipped the castle. I love touring castles but unfortunately this one was pretty boring. The history behind the castle was cool, and if the tour was free then I would have been happy with the visit. But it wasn’t. They wouldn’t let... More
