A very interesting and deeply moving story
One of the best tours I’ve taken in Ireland. Free, in several languages, it tells you the story of the old workhouse in Kilkenny and the way the people lived in there. Interesting, well documented and deeply moving. I recommend it!

    Must do.
Must do. Free walking self guided tour with headsets. It is in a shopping centre area but you are so engrossed by what you are hearing that the people around you are not a distraction. We found this has been a highlight because we really felt we learnt about this horrific time in Irish history.

Hallowed Ground in a Shopping Mall
The unassuming shopper would never know the history of the hallowed ground beneath their feet except for the Kilkenny Famine Experience. Simply go to customer service and ask for the AV guide. Then follow the signage and take in the juxtaposition of then vs. now. The audio and video guide is engaging and covers a critical piece of Irish history in a historical building.

    An historical shopping trip.
Picked up headphones and screen from visitors’ desk in shopping centre. Staff explained exactly what I needed to do and provided me with a map. Moving around the shopping centre, I was able to stop at certain points and listen to the history of the building. I could pause the video and do some shopping as I went.

This is an audio tour you pickup from the help desk and wander around the mall. The most notable item is the statue of the children from the past near Castlecomer New Rd. I don’t recommend.

The self guided audio tour gave a very informative insight in what would have been a very difficult life.

What a brilliant idea, using the shopping mall on the site of the former workhouse during the time of famine in the 1840's to tell the story of the famine and the workhouse itself. Very interesting if somewhat harrowing! So much research has gone into the history!
Reception desk in the mall supplies headphones and audio/video equipment.

Tour takes about 50 minutes while walking around the mall to various locations. Most of the info is provided via the free headset you receive.
Fascinating info about the Irish Workhouse System (poor houses) in the mid to late 1800’s.
I have ancestors who died in these workhouses so it was especially poignant.

The experience to understand the horrors of the workhouse and the famine is inside theMac Donagh Junction Shopping Centre. The AV tour device leads you through the centre to find where the main parts were. The strange disconnect is watching 21st century people walking with take away coffee and food whilst listening to the tales of starvation and disease of the 19th Century. If it was intended to make people realise how comparatively well-off we now are it hits the spot.

The mass grave of 970 poor souls and how it was examined to discover their fates was astonishing. They will not now be forgotten. Young children may find it distressing I would imagine.
