Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were there around 22 December and saw the sun rise.Quite a magical experience. You don't have to be at the exact solstice when it is crowded. The day after there was better weather and only 30 or so people. You could come at sunset to see the alignment of the second tomb. It has more ornate carvings - which the rising and setting sun highlights. This is not an easy place to find and Google can get it wrong but it is worth the effort. BTW the local farmer has signs saying to park in his farm yard as there isn't much parking at the site itself

The Knockroe Passage Tomb is located about 30-40 minutes from Kilkenny. It is off the main roads a fair bit but worth a visit if you have time. These tombs are over 5,000 years old so just the history alone was surreal. The site is located on farm land but fairly easy to find if using gps.

Pretty far off the beaten path. It was a nice place to stop while traveling around. It was pretty awesome to go to a place so old but if it isnt on your way it isnt worth too long of a drive.

Knockroe Passage Tomb, located on the Kilkenny-Tipperary border, is a megalithic burial site, which dates back more than 5,000 years. Considered as important but not as prominent as Newgrange or Knowth, it is unique as it aligns with both the rising and the setting sun on the Winter Solstice (December 21st). There are two separate tombs. The east facing tomb lights up at sunrise and the west facing tomb lights up at sunset. Some wonderful carvings on the interior of the tomb. Be prepared to drive up some one car roads to make it to the location. The area is unspoiled. Wonderful view of the landscape from the tombs. Information signage at the site. For those who want to take a step back in history - I'd recommend it.

This neolithic passage tomb is unusual because the two passages align with the Sun on Winter solstice, both the rising and setting sun. There is fantastic 5000 year old rock art on some of the stones. the setting in a rural and scenic landscape is fantastic. Set amidst a lush and green background and being free to visit what more could you ask for ?
There stone age artists were carving stone with stone, they had no metal objects so all the more impressive....... A must see in the area.

There are two passage tombs here and the area has numerous other Megalithic remains. The tombs align with the winter solstice (21 Dec) sunrise and sunset, Excavations have found evidence of human burials and various grave goods such as beads. Worth a look if you are in Kilkenny. At the winter solstice each year a crowd gathers for sunrise and sunset. Nice to know it's still valued after 5,000 years. There are various rock carvings on the upright stones (orthostats).

It was amazing to get to see such ancient history! Not all of the carvings remained, but the ones that are still there are very cool. It's out of the way on some very narrow roads, but well worth it to see the site.

You'll really have to search for this place to find it. However, the explanations, though succint, are quite good. If passage graves are your thing, Knockroe is worth it.

We visit this expecting narrow lanes and a walk. However there is a lovely new road and parking right by the site. It should therefore now be accessible to people with relatively limited mobility. Really interesting history and good views. Good signage.
