About
Located on the 13th century site of St Mary's cruciform church and graveyard. As the starting point of the 'Medieval Mile' trail, it brings to life Kilkenny's history as Ireland's premier medieval city. Displays of Kilkenny's civic treasures and replicas of some of the High Crosses of Ossory illustrate the local Gaelic monastic heritage and the ancient city's historic role in Ireland. The Interactive Audio Tour is available throughout the day, and can be downloaded to your personal device. Audio Guides are also available, and come in 5 languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish). Child friendly versions are also available in each language. The LEGO® mini figure Hunt, which sees 10 characters from Kilkenny's history hidden around the museum in the form of LEGO® mini figures has become extremely popular with kids of all ages! School tours, language schools and third level, please see our website for costings and booking information.

    Amazing Local History Guide
In ancient Irish culture the Seanchaí, a poet and historian, occupied a position of great respect. The word came to mind when I visited the excellent Medieval Mile museum in Kilkenny and took a museum tour with a modern day Seanchaí John Halpin. John weaves the 800 years of local history into a compelling tale. He weaves humor, deep knowledge and passion into his compelling talk. Though he is extremely knowledgable, John is not nerdy or bookish. You do not feel as much that you are learning history as much as hearing the local gossip of 500 years ago. He does an amazing job of seamlessly weaving the artifacts in the museum into his tales. I will never forget how he brought to life the skeletons of three local women, making these women who died centuries ago seem as if John had known them all personally. I am a retired high school teacher and New York City tour guide and I cannot hold a candle to John. If you really want to appreciate the history of this ancient town then there is no better experience you could have than taking a tour with this fantastic raconteur.

    Informative and enjoyable Medieval Museum
Wandering round Kilkenny we chanced upon this delightful museum, in an ancient repurposed church hidden in the winding passages of Kilkenny. Intrigued, we were supplied with a self-tour guide machine, and spent a happy hour discovering about life in medieval Kilkenny, from roof building techniques to how to read ancient bones for information about the person's life. And spotting Lego models hidden in the displays - my favourite, of course, was the Leprechaun. Highly recommended.

    This tour guide was brilliant!
This was an excellent museum visit and a lot of what made it so memorable was the superb tour given by John. He is a masterful story-teller, providing an entertaining and educational review of the items on display. We have visited bigger, more extensive museums but never before with a tour guide as talented as this one. Highly recommended.

The Medieval Mile Museum is a Kilkenny Must
I had modest expectations for this place. I was glad to be proven wrong. This church from the Middle Ages has been turned into a museum commemorating this church's and Kilkenny's history. It is filled with interesting artifacts as well as video dramatizations. Particularly, one gets a sense of of the worst moment in Kilkenny's history, when Bubonic Plague hit in 1348 killing half the city's population. A monk wrote a document questioning if this was going to be the end of the human race. The guided tour is excellent.

Myself and my aunt recently did the Heritage Week tour of the graveyard with our guide, Sharon. Sharon was absolutely fantastic - so informative, friendly, and entertaining! Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend a visit to the museum.

Just finished this walking tour with John. The tour was amazing and John was the best guide of any tour I have done in Ireland. Be sure to do this! His attention to detail was fabulous. And a wonderful sense of humor, too!

As a family we are not a big fan of guided tours and often times go off on our own to explore. We were on our first trip to Ireland and on our second day we came to Kilkenny to see the main attraction of a castle. After that tour we came across this place while walking around. That is where we came across a delightful man name “John.” We were our usual stand offish selves for about 30 seconds until he asked where we were from and what we have seen. For the next 45 minutes John taught us about the history of Killkenny in what can only be explained as a masterful presentation with quips, stories, and little known facts (to us). We have 15,13, and 10 year old and they were mesmerized by his stories and how brilliantly he spoke and engaged with them. It was quite an experience to watch. We saw him in the street later in the day and he came over and thanked us for coming and then recommended some other things we could do. I highly recommend this place and what ever they are paying John, they should double it.

We ventured from Southern California to Ireland for our honeymoon and booked a guided tour. We got John as our tour guide and loved every second of it. The staff is friendly and turned what would have been a boring walk listening to audio into an interactive experience. John made jokes and taught us about the history behind the entire city. We saw kids having fun too since they pass out a treasure hunt for kids to do during the tour. If you’re considering going, I highly recommend taking a guided tour and even requesting John. We truly enjoyed the experience. PS- it’s mostly indoors and not a mile walk 😂

We didn't know you could book a guided tour and not been in the museum long before John, one of the guides came over and kindly gave up his time to share some of his extensive knowledge. I wish we had been organised enough to book a tour with John of the whole Medieval Mile. He was incredibly engaging and brought medieval Kilkenny to life for us. Thank you so much John!

Our tour guide was brilliant at giving us the history of Kilkenny! I am not a history buff, but could have listened to her a lot longer and I have remembered what she said, and that is saying a lot. The museum is beautifully laid out and the artifacts well displayed. The interactive displays were very interesting and well done. I did the self guided tour prior and then the guided tour went into more depth with the major displays. You could tell that our tour guide loves what she does.
