About
Located on the 13th century site of St Mary's cruciform church and graveyard. As the starting point of the 'Medieval Mile' trail, it brings to life Kilkenny's history as Ireland's premier medieval city. Displays of Kilkenny's civic treasures and replicas of some of the High Crosses of Ossory illustrate the local Gaelic monastic heritage and the ancient city's historic role in Ireland. The Interactive Audio Tour is available throughout the day, and can be downloaded to your personal device. Audio Guides are also available, and come in 5 languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish). Child friendly versions are also available in each language. The LEGO® mini figure Hunt, which sees 10 characters from Kilkenny's history hidden around the museum in the form of LEGO® mini figures has become extremely popular with kids of all ages! School tours, language schools and third level, please see our website for costings and booking information.

In ancient Irish culture the Seanchaí, a poet and historian, occupied a position of great respect. The word came to mind when I visited the excellent Medieval Mile museum in Kilkenny and took a museum tour with a modern day Seanchaí John Halpin. John weaves the 800 years of local history into a compelling tale. He weaves humor, deep knowledge and passion into his compelling talk. Though he is extremely knowledgable, John is not nerdy or bookish. You do not feel as much that you are learning history as much as hearing the local gossip of 500 years ago. He does an amazing job of seamlessly weaving the artifacts in the museum into his tales. I will never forget how he brought to life the skeletons of three local women, making these women who died centuries ago seem as if John had known them all personally. I am a retired high school teacher and New York City tour guide and I cannot hold a candle to John. If you really want to appreciate the history of this ancient town then there is no better experience you could have than taking a tour with this fantastic raconteur.

He really made the experience what it is.
Well worth a visit. I have to mention the lovely head haired receptionist who was so friendly and always had a smile on.

We had a guided tour yesterday with John and he was absolutely fantastic. While the museum was full of interesting exhibits from the past, it was John's abundance of knowledge and storytelling that really brought it all together and made it a great tour. Couldn't recommend enough!

Friendly and well worth doing. Without a guide you see just stuff. Everything has a story. The lady brought this to life for us

My Mama and I stumbled upon this museum while exploring Kilkenny before their Saint Patrick’s Day parade.
After venturing into Café Nero and having a delicious pastry we wandered into a mysterious courtyard behind the town hall.
Lo and behold it was an ancient Catholic Church decommissioned and converted into a magnificent little museum.
The displays were phenomenal and meticulously put together. The desk attendants Sherry (I think/hope I remember her name correctly) and John were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. They even helped me figure out why my surname (Clark) frequently has an “e” placed on the back of it in this region of Ireland.
I had a great conversation with John following our self-guided audio tour.
This museum is certainly worth seeing.
My only negative remark is that it is a tad steep on days beyond Saint Patrick’s day. 15 pounds per person for a well kept but small museum is a bit too much in my opinion.
Regardless of the pricing, I’m leaving 5 stars for the overall experience. :)

We did the guided tour with John. He told us all about the history of St Mary’s Church. Originally a Catholic Church , it was turned into a Protestant church. The museum held relics from hundreds of years ago up to finds from less than 10 years ago. You could tell that John was truly interested in the history he was explaining to us. Our tour did last about 90 min

At the time of our tour it was closer to closing time and it was just my wife, my self, and one other couple. John, our guide was amazing. The amount of knowledge dropped on us and added witty humor made the experience very memorable, which brings myself to recommend doing the guided tour over the self guided because in my opinion you miss you on lots of information only reading the plaques along the wall around the museum.
