This may be nice for someone who hasn't been on a cave tour, but after having gone on tours in the Marble Arch caves (in Northern Ireland) and caving in the Burren (Cullaun Two cave with the Burren OEC), this one was rather boring...

The sign clearly said that March to mid June, it's open 0930 to 1700. I arrived on Monday 2nd March at roughly 3pm, and found it closed. Very unprofessional.

The visit to the caves cost €5 and are by guided tour only. There is a 10min video at start which is ok but the enjoyment starts with the entrance to the caves. The tour is about 50 mins and our guide (Margaret) was very informative. The lights out part at the end was one of the highlights.

Went with my 5 and 7yr old daughters. The tour is about 50 mins long with plenty of references that will keep the kids happy. Our guide was excellent, she was very down to earth, patient and knowledgeable. For a fiver per adult, this was great value too.

We travelled as a family during the school midterm break. The place was fairly busy but the tour group wasn't overcrowded. There are over 700 steep steps down into the caves. Our guide a French man was very informative and had great knowledge about the caves and Irish history in general. The tour lasted about 1 hour including a short video. At the end we had a lovely snack in the onsite cafe.

Nice caves only accessible by a guide, who was full of interesting facts. The steps down were ok , but wow, the steps up are something else lol . Nice place to visit and see something different .

We visited Dunmore Cave on a Saturday afternoon in July 2019. We arrived when a tour group had already started and was watching the video. We were told to join that group so we missed the video. The descent into the cave goes down many steps (700). The cave is lit and easy to walk through. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, but not very engaging, and this does make a difference on one's experience of a tour. We enjoyed the cave itself, and all of its calcite formations. The stories about its Viking history were interesting as well as mysterious. We spent some additional time after the tour speaking with our guide about some of the chambers that visitors do not have access to. We stopped in the visitor's center after the tour to look through photo albums of explorations into the hidden chambers. All-in-all, a worthwhile site to visit. Our children, ages 11 and 13, enjoyed it. It is only a short distance north of Kilkenny, and a very easy drive with plenty of parking. It is a Heritage Site and accepts OPW cards.

Bonjour Patricia,
Comment avez-vous fait pour aller jusqu'à la grotte ? Existe-il des départs organisés depuis le centre de Kilkenny ?
Merci,
Georgy

Hi, is Dunmore cave suitable for young children (thinking of all the steps)? Thanks

Hi, I went in a party with a couple who'd brought their young children along (3 and 7). The children loved it but the youngest had to be carried up a lot of steps, so you'd need to be physically very fit to manage. The guide also gave us a no holds barred 'horrible history' of the caves, so your children will need to be able to cope with scary stories. Finally, this is not an attraction suitable for peoppe or children who are very afraid of the dark. Hope that helps!
