What an amazing experience!!! We are in our mid-60's and are fairly active for our age. We did a fair amount of training to prepare ourselves for this hike - we did 7 days - Killarney to Sneem - and our tour was arranged with Wonderful Ireland. I cannot say enough good about this tour company. They are extremely detailed in communication, execution, follow through, and we stayed at the best possible locations at each stop. They moved our luggage to each stop and saw that our daily hosts provided us with a box lunch. emergency cell phone, detailed maps with trail descriptions, and trekking poles (absolute necessity). Yes, the hike was difficult at times, but we were fine. The trail is very diverse in terms of terrain and trail types. When we went the theme was WET! Of the 7 days it rained on 4 days. At times the rain was moderate and at times just showers. In places the trail was extremely wet and boggy. I highly recommend water proof shoes and also the use of mole skin for your feet. You will encounter sheep poo in abundance. I estimate that we climbed over 125 stiles along the way. At times we walked on back roads, pastures, rocky trails. At times you scale small mountains and almost every day you will be climbing and then descending. The views are spectacular. The lodging hosts at each stop were always very friendly and accommodating. Our favorite stop was at the Stepping Stone. The hosts here are very kind, accommodating, helpful and the food is gourmet quality. I know I am rambling but there is so much to say about this experience. We wished we had done the entire Way, but we did not have enough time and we did not think we would last 9 days on the trail - turns out we could have done it. Plan some extra time to see Killarney - it's a real nice town and a nice area. We spent one day in Dublin on each end of the trip - taking the train to Killarney and back - real easy to do.

This is a review on the Kerry Way, which is a walking route, and not the "Ring of Kerry", which refers to a motor route around the Inveragh Peninsula.
My wife and I did a 12 day itinerary, which included 2 rest days. On 1 of those days, we went out to Skellig Michael, which was outstanding. We had "Tailor-Made Tours" do our booking, and they were great (5 *s). The Way itself was outstanding. A few days were strenuous, involving some elevation gains and descents. Day over from Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen was long, but also had some excellent walking. Coming down into Cahersiveen involves either a circuitous route or a long walk on tarmac; might want to call for a ride once you hit the road down to Cahersiveen, and then, get a ride back up the next morn.
Be ready for inclement weather. On the ridge above Waterville, we got into a wind driven rain coming off the ocean there. We had all the needed gear, so all was good although way marking could use a bit of help. If the weather had been sunny, it would have been no problem.
Ireland is incredible, Irish are an absolute pleasure and folks we met along the route (Germans, Canadians, Americans, Irish) were great to stop and talk to. We saw many of these same folks in the pubs after a days walk and had lots more fun with more ongoing conversations.
All and all, a fantastic experience which I would highly recommend. If you have been eyeing this route for a while, pull the trigger and start the process of planning the trip today. If you are an avid walker, you'll love it.

We did the Ring of Kerry while on a motorcycle trip and it was one of the favourite spots in the south of Ireland. Spectacular views and plenty of pullouts along the way. Nice to go when it is quieter on the roads.

This was just one of the view that we saw on our scenic drive on the Killarney Ring of Kerry. History abounds.

Beautiful vistas, a lovely drive and scenery everywhere. Having been to Kerry a few times before, this is definitely a must for anybody travelling here. Take your time on the narrow roads and make sure to pull in to the side of road to take in the views.

We just finished hiking 80 miles of the Kerry Way. At 10 miles per day (and occasional "off days") we simply did not have enough time to do the entire loop.
Started at Killarney and went CCW finishing in Sneem. We skipped the inland section from Cahersiveen to Waterville.
Thoughts:
1. You cannot miss the section from Killarney to Glenbeigh. Both Black & Bridia valleys were wonderful. It is shocking that some tour companies start you in Glenbeigh.
2 . We took the loop above Lough Accoose - that was a mistake. Lots of traffic on the road leading into Glencar - take the shortcut if not under water.
3. We dealt with bad weather for the Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen section. We would have enjoyed it more had it not been pouring.
4. If we could do it over again, we would have had our B&B in Cahersiveen drop us at Teeraha and hiked to at least Mastergeehy before getting a lift into Waterville.
5. Waterville to Caherdaniel was great - ended our hike at the Blind Piper pub...my idea of hiking.
6. Caherdaniel to Sneem was not as exciting as other days but Sneem is a really neat town and a fun place to visit.
All in all, our group preferred the Kerry Way hiking ever-so-slightly over last year's hike of the West Highland Way (which was great). Kerry is much greener and a bit less rugged.
Our B&Bs were fantastic, the fish and chips were terrific and we were all sad to leave Kerry.

Take the day and drive the beautiful and narrow roads of Ireland. Stop at small villages and landmarks and just take it all in. A must do

As well as outstanding scenery there are wonderful historic ruins worth visiting all around the Ring. Make sure you go further south onto the even smaller Ballinskelligs Ring for even better secenery.

Do you need hiking poles? Can you do this in some Solomon hiking shoes instead of boots? I’m off to do this walk next week, also planning 9-10 days.
Thanks

Hi, It's all a great adventure, but the day from Sneem to Kenmare is long and tiring so you could consider avoiding that section. All sections will be very tough if you strike heavy rain. You can download a series of maps from irishtrails also I recommend you consider waterproof socks from a company called sealskinz in the U.K. also walking poles . Regards Mark

Hello! My daughter and I are considering doing to Kerry Way - or at least part of it this March. We will probably only have 4-6 hiking days. I saw that there is a bus on part of the route so we could cut possibly some of the less scenic areas. Any suggestions? Do you think we will be able to find accommodations or is it usually booked months in advance? I thought we could hike to Black Valley then bus to Glenbeigh and stay in Glenbeigh. Bus from Kenmare to Killarney since some of that is repetitious. Any suggestions on another area section or two to miss? We can do up to 30km/d. Is 11km route from Waterville to Caherdaniel better than the other option? THanks so much for any feedback!!!!

You should know there is a new bus that travels around this area! It's called Local Link and goes much more often than the 279A, and also goes to Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, and more.
I stay in Glenbeigh in the summer, and can assure you the entire area has plenty of places to stay - and unless it's the height of summer you won't have a problem making a booking. I talk to lots of walkers on my day hikes, and many wish they had NOT booked in advance; some like to stay longer in a village, finding there is great music that night, but NO they can't as they've already booked their next place.... Slow down and enjoy it! There are also plenty of day hikes so you could (for example) stay in Cahersiveen and do Cnoc na dTobar one day; Benntee Loop another day; the walk to Waterville or Derrynane the next day..... In Glenbeigh the Windy Gap loop is a good long day hike.... Waterville has many, too!
hey all,
I'm planning on walking the trail between Killarney and Glenbeigh at the end of October. Do you recommend the trail?
How did you divide the trail? did you only sleep in guest houses or did you also use a tent?
Do you have any recommendations as to equipment or clothing for this time of year?
thanks in advance!

It's a lovely half-hour drive, but walking will take you 2/3 days depending on your fitness and how much gear you are carrying, you also need to allow for time spent looking at the views on the way and they do change every few feet. You cannot just pitch a tent anywhere here, and there are only campsites at the start and at the finish, so you'll need to have B&Bs pre-booked to ensure a room for the night. You'll also need B&Bs with laundry service if you are doing it now, as you'll be both wet and cold. I've lived in Ireland and would walk around in a t-shirt in December on the East Coast, but on the Wild Atlantic Way I'd go with layers and be very prepared for the wet, windy and cold weather.

Hello to you,
Can anyone tell me how to do the Ring of Kerry? Do go around? Where to stop? Those towns to visit? Those observations to stop? Should I do a walking trail? where? Is one day enough?
Thanks in advance for any help (:

I would suggest a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide. The Ring of Kerry is so popular that any hotel or travel agency should be able to help you set one up or to join a tour. It helps with a guide to point out the wonderful attractions, to know where to stop to eat, etc. I think you miss a lot doing this on your own.
Hallo!
I am planning to walk Kerry Way on foot. Is it necessary to books the accomodation in advance? Thank you,

Hello, Ruzanna! It depends on the season of trip! If you are planning do it in Summer, I suppose that better to book the accommodation in advance. Have a good trip!

Can anyone recommend a good guide book for walking the Kerry Way? I am also wondering if the trails are well marked and if it is possible to avoid walking on major roads. Thank you!

I do not advise walking the Kerry Way. Sorry - I do not have a guide book to recommend. I would suggest signing up for a local tour that include the Kerry Way.

Howdy all,
In a couple months my uncle and I are going to be doing a tiny bit of sightseeing in Ireland. For a variety of reasons we are going to be very limited on time, but would still like to do a one day (possibly two) hike somewhere along the Kerry Way. Is this remotely possible? Are there any good segments of the trail that don't require a multi-day committment to the hike? Places to hop on a bus or hire a driver to shuttle us back to where we need to go?
Thanks

There are many places to hop on and off this trail. One day we went from Glenbeigh, up onto the trail, around the mountain and came back down again at Rossbeigh beach. Total of about 6-7 miles. Another group went over the top of the mountain and ended up at the same place. It involves some private property that is part of the Kerry Way. The owners have given access to hikers, you just need to respect their property and close gates behind you to keep their sheep in.
