Fascinating view of how border collies herd sheep
Jun 2019
A fascinating demonstration of using border collies to herd sheep and an interesting demonstration of sheep shearing. We were on a CIE Tour of Scotland and Ireland and the Kissane Sheep Farm was part of our itinerary. It was truly fascinating watching them use the border collies to herd sheep. All of the communication with the dogs was non-verbal and consisted primarily of whistles. The dogs responded to these non-verbal commands and were quite proficient at herding the sheep. After watching the dogs, we then moved inside one of the barns for a demonstration of sheep shearing. One man narrated the demo and explained the process of how the sheep are sheared and when is the best time of year to shear the sheep. The other man did an amazing job of completely shearing a sheep in a matter of minutes - with the coat coming off in 1 large piece. This offered a great look at the local culture.

Kissane sheep adorable and very interesting

The visit to the kissane sheep farm was so interesting. We truly enjoyed and appreciated the demonstration of the sheep herding by the border collie and its handler. It was amazing to see how they worked together. The sheep shearing demonstration was also very interesting and informative. They also sell products like soaps and lotions which are excellent.

Really fun seeing the border collie working the sheep. It was a beautiful setting too. And interesting to learn about the sheep business and watch the shearing.

Great place to see working dogs in action
Aug 2019 • Couples
If you’re in the area and have never seen a border collie in action, you need to drop by. It was a great demo showing how intelligent these dogs actually are. The sheep were rounded up with no muss, no Goss, no bother. The shearing demo and info provided was a great bonus.

Outstanding Sheep Dog Demonstration by: Kate
Jul 2019 • Business
On Tuesday 19 July, I once again visited Kissane Sheep Farm for the midday Sheep Dog and Sheep Shearing Demonstration with my Group of USA Visitors. The talent and the skills of the Dogs were amazing and the scenery was also outstanding. Beautiful Green Landscape with the Valley Floor running along the bottom part of the Farm. Everyone on the Farm and this includes all of the Dogs were so friendly and Evan did an amazing Demonstration. It was just awesome to meet the 7 Baby Puppies and their mother Gwena. I will be back again another time with another Group and everyone on this tour are still raving about their experience at the Farm on Tuesday .

Looked nice, nice website, but......

Made this the highlight of our day, talked it up, kids were very excited. Emailed and called a couple weeks prior to confirm that we would see a sheepdog/sheep shearing demo at 1pm. When we arrived, man looked up from his phone after several minutes. Said, no, no demo at 1 pm. “Come back in several hours or try again tomorrow.” When we asked why, he said, “things change” and went back to his phone. We had driven 2 hours out of our way to get there. Yeah, I don’t think we’ll try again tomorrow. Or ever.

Did not feel the love
Jul 2019 • Family
This sheep farm sounded like a great tour, but as guests, we were shuffled in like a factory. The people working there clearly viewed this as a way to make extra money but didn't do it for the love of sharing their farm or how sheep are raised in Ireland. The information given when they were shearing the sheep was minimal and didn't help explain anything about sheep farms. The man handling the sheep was very careless and rough with it. I started feeling sick to my stomach when I saw how he bumped it into the gate and then shut the gate on it. I understand they have to be firm to get a good grip, but he clearly didn't treat the animal with care and respect. Next we went outside to see the dog round up the sheep. This part was better but again, little information was given to explain the process. I felt like the guests were an unwelcome addition to the workers' day. I'd recommend finding another sheep farm in Ireland. We also visited one in Dingle (don't know the name though) and they were caring with the sheep, cared about visitors, and let the kids hold a baby lamb.

Getting to see a sheep dog in action is very cool! I really enjoyed the demonstration. We got to meet and pet the dogs afterwards. We also saw a sheep shearing demo. Parking was easy.

UNBELIEVABLE!
Jun 2019 • Family
We had a stop planned here for a couple months before our trip and have to say - it was better than any review we read! The farm, the location, the people, the dogs and of course the sheep were simply amazing. Seeing how this process works, how trained the dogs are and all of this set in a location that will take your breath away. We visited with a 19 and 22 year old and they too loved the visit. Honestly it would have been an amazing value at twice the price - if you’re questioning the stop then I hope this makes up your mind - don’t hesitate - GO!

Saw a good demonstration of ship dog herding and sheep shearing. Well worth the stop. Also some sheep products available for sale.
