Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great place for a night out or a drink before dinner. Was lucky to get the snug next to the bar last time and spent a few hours with friends.

Monty! Where can I start? The best bartender out there. Remembers all of our names. Remembers all of our orders. Just made our night! Give this guy a raise asap!

Terrible place to be at. Went in on a busy college night which was obvious with all the young people out on the night and as I was at my table a bar man said he didn’t like the look of me and that I was after too much and made security escort me out of the premises. I proceeded to ask why I had to leave and was never given and explanation. Would not recommend this spot due to terrible bartenders and poor staff ability to deal with the human race

The originally bar lady was pleasant, soon after another chap came on duty who was extremely rude. He asked our group to split into 3 which is fair enough as it was quite a large group. He then made a comment about "that baby shouldn't be in a pub" She's 2 and it was 17:50 in the afternoon.

My partner said she would take my daughter and me and the family should stay out.

The pub soon filled with students who were all very pleasant and friendly, however the same barman didn't mention about them sitting in separate groups to adhere to covid restrictions. My experience really went downhill when the guy that was singing that night started.

The whole pub was singing along to traditional Irish songs having a great time, I was the only person not singing along as I didn't know the words being from England. One member of our party jokingly said "Spot the Englishman"

That's where it turned sour, I was repeatedly called a "black and tan" by members of staff and some of the students, as if this wasn't bad enough the guy singing caught wind of this and then started a singing a song of which the lyrics were

"Oh ah up the ra (IRA) " repeatedly

I felt intimidated and singled out, I made out like it didn't bother me but I was shocked that this sort of thing still goes on.

As well as this my Uncle was called Grandad by the bar staff as majority of the people in attendance were students he's 53.....

As well as this my uncle ordered a round of drinks they were bought to the table, because it took him longer than the 10 seconds the barman was prepared to wait for him to find which pocket his wallet was in he said "If you haven't got the money I'm taking them back" and took the drinks away!

It was such a shame the night was ruined by being on the end of racial slurs and IRA songs aimed at me as 99% of the people I spoke to were lovely and very welcoming, the pub had a great atmosphere and its obvious to see why it is so popular.

My words of advice to the guy with the beard behind the bar is customer service service goes a long way, you were more than happy to take the €300 from our party of 11 when we were all there, but when that party shrank to 4 and we slowed up on the drinking the bar mans attitude changed.

The bar has great potential but I'd advice management to train bar staff on how to deal with customers and that singing IRA songs and calling people black and tans isn't acceptable or welcoming.

Best pub in Woodquay, one of the best in Galway City. Mesmerizing atmosphere, with an eclectic mix of guests, a unique blend of locals and international visitors. Superfriendly bar staff who will make you feel welcome and have you enjoying the "craic" Ireland is so famous for! One of my firm favourites for years now, both on a personal level and as a tourguide. I won't bring my guests anywhere else now when in the city centre.

Couldn’t recommend a better place to spend the night, we were seated within 5 mins after queuing. The manager remembered our drinks form the night before and treated us like regulars. Very small authentic Irish pub with a huge atmosphere. We will always make a point to visit Barr an chaladh when in Galway!!
