- 2CAtravelersBrattleboro, Vermont835 contributionsBeautiful "New" CatherdralOpened in 1965, this is Europe's newest stone cathedral. They do ask for a donation to enter. The interior is quite beautiful and unusual, especially the wooden ceiling which is quite different from other cathedrals in Europe. You can spend quite a bit of time simply exploring this unique cathedral. It's an easy walk from the Old Town/Latin Quarter parts of Galway.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2023
- Lynn h10 contributionsGalway cathedralThe acoustics are amazing and the cathedral itself is a work of art. The problem is the parking to see it as it is extremely expensive and also very limited. It is well worth a visit however. you won't need more than about 30 mins unless you want to attend a MassVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 November 2023
- Paul ClemenceCrediton, United Kingdom183 contributionsAn essential place to visit in Galway CityThe architecture and beauty of this cathedral is simply heavenly. Spend some time sitting quietly in a pew and absorb the atmosphere. There are many features that are highlights. I would like to mention the picture of Mary and Jesus painted by Adam Pomeroy. I found this picture profound and very moving.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 July 2024

If you visit Galway you have to find 10 minutes to visit the Cathedral.
It is certainly a recent building, about 60 years old. Well built and decorated with huge mosaics. Despite the internal dimensions, it is a peaceful environment.
Traditional, functional, massive and made with local materials. The beautiful Connemara marbles have been used for decorations.
The cathedral stands on one side of the old Galway prison which was acquired by the church in 1941. Incredible to think that most of the costs had been covered by donations!
Definitely highly recommended.

This cathedral is enormous but invite to pray. They respect social distancing. The ceiling is new thanks to a recent restoration work. At the end of Mass, the organ played; it is a big one, as large as the building !

Absolutely beautiful. Different to the other churches and places of cathedrialliness in that it is modern :) . The acoustics are wonderful . Parking is a bit of a problem and , to me, expensive, as there are no hourly parking but a flat daily rate (7 Euros) that's OK for the day, but not for the 1/2 hr or so that you would probably be there.

Really good Cathedral to visit and enjoy, this Cathedral wouldn’t be out of place in a capitol city that’s the size and architectural design to you.
Located just outside the city centre and across the river it’s worth the 10 minute walk.
Also loved the coloured glass windows, wonderful for photo taking.

Wonderful stained glass throughout this beautiful “new” cathedral! Really enjoyed the variety of stained glass styles - never seen such variety within a single building. It was fun figuring out the biblical stories represented by each window!

This is a beautiful cathedral by any measure. It is not an ancient or historically important building — it was constructed from 1958-65 — but it is impressive inside and out. Its 145-foot green dome is distinctive, as are its stained glass windows and mosaics. Definitely worth a stop on any visit to Galway.

Really enjoyed Galway Cathedral, it is more modern than others we have visited in Ireland but the detail is stunning - there is even a Holy water urn. Parking is available at the Cathedral (there is a fee), as are toilets (again there is a fee). It is very bright and colourful while still maintaining its religious purpose. Recomended.

A truly beautiful building, despite the time of its construction (from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s) which presented us with an impressive series of ugliness (at least in Italy).
The idea of rosettes in the shape of flowers with 5 petals is extraordinary and not at all banal (which is not trivial due to the numerical symbolism that Christianity generally attributes to the number 5 and which - probably - recomposes semantic expectations through the idea that life floral can overcome "evil").
The stone is the same as many other Irish religious buildings, but this dive into a modernity (not at all schizophrenic, fluid, without identity, without anthropological reasons or without taste) is truly an incredible way of expressing it. So much light, so much harmony.

Recent cathedral in its construction (1950s) which aims to recall the cathedrals of antiquity in the style and material used (stone and wood). The interior is essential with exposed stone, decorated in some places with mosaics depicting biblical characters. The barrel-vaulted roof is notable, covered in wood and the blue color of the dome is interesting, creating a contrast with the rest of the structure while maintaining the overall harmony. A visit to the cathedral absolutely recommended if you find yourself walking around Galway (free entry).
