I walked the Rob Roy Way mid of October, shortly before all the accommodations closed for the season. I was incredibly lucky with the weather, it only rained a couple of times and not that strong at all. Nonetheless I recommend waterproof gear, especially shoes. Make sure that they don‘t let any water through the soles or the material above since you will be walking though very wet grass and an incredibly boggy wet area. I had 5 walking days, and even though I wish the mileage would have been a bit more equal each days after days 2 and 3 (33km and 30km) I enjoyed the shorter 15/16km days before and after.
The scenery was absolutely stunning and very diverse. Lush forests, hills, farmland, high plateaus with lakes - I recommend going in autumn to get to enjoy all the breathtaking colours!
I also wrote a very detailed feedback to HillwalkTours and got a very nice reply in which they are open to constructive criticism and ideas.
For the route between Callander and Lochaernhead: you will be walking mostly a cycle road with very firm ground - I wish I had worn running shoes or trailrunners for this part of the route since my hiking boots were not made for such conditions.
The B&B‘s were absolutely lovely and very accommodating - I am vegan and they all were more than happy to prepare warm vegan breakfasts and make adaptations.
At this time of year I was the only one staying in the first two B&Bs but they never skimped on anything. Check in was possible at an earlier time pretty much everywhere, so that wasn‘t a problem either.
I really recommend HillwalkTours, the organization was top notch and the price very fair for all that was included (detailed instructions and walking pack, GPS data, luggage transfer, B&B‘s,…)

Dear Teresa B,
Thank you very much for your lovely review and for giving us such great constructive feedback. We appreciate it.
We try our best to spread the hiking distance evenly across all days for each itinerary we create. However, this is not always possible due to the need to use established locations for trailheads, which typically means our walk lengths depend on the distances between the towns, villages or points of interest along the trail. Having our walks cover the same distance per day across each itinerary would generally mean increasing the number and length of walker transfers, which many of our walkers (and indeed our B&B owners) would see as a negative. We will, of course, take your comments on board when reviewing our itineraries.
Also thank you for highlighting the different terrain between Callander and Lochaernhead, we will look into making this clearer for our walkers. We have already included more information about appropriate footwear in our FAQ's page as a result of walker feedback.
We are happy that we were able to make your tour along the Rob Roy Way such a memorable experience. It gave us great pleasure to organise this hiking tour for you.
We’re looking forward to helping you book another tour with Hillwalk Tours in the near future. Happy Trails!

We booked our Jun 2021 Dingle Way walk through Hillwalk Tours. From starting the booking process, all the way through to the end of the walk I was so impressed with their organisation, efficiency, value for money, and friendliness. It is clear that the people at Hillwalk really want to do everything they can to make your walk enjoyable, and it was so wonderful to not have to think about our logistics. We just focussed on enjoying the walking each day, knowing everything was taken care of!
I also get the impression that they look after their partners very well -- all our B&B hosts and transfer drivers spoke very highly of Hillwalk and their professionalism. It's nice to know you're booking through a company that values and supports the local businesses.
I'm looking forward to arranging our next walk with Hillwalk!

Picked Hillwalking Tours for our walk on the Pembroke Coast Path based on various positive reviews. They did not disappoint. Communications were very responsive especially when arrangements had to be altered and re-altered due to changes in Covid quarantine Regis for visitors from Canada. Background notes for the trip were excellent and specific details of the daily itinerary were compact but adequate and accurate. Accommodation booked was generally very , very good. Taxi arrangements were as flexible as could be expected , very reliable and drivers knowledgeable and friendly. Baggage transfer was also reliable with our bags always awaiting arrival.

Everything was very well organised and we were very well looked after. The material that we were given was very detailed and informative. Every step of our itinerary was described in the Hiking Notes, so it was impossible to get lost. Before we set out on our trip, Anthony from Hillwalk Tours was very helpful and patient and gave detailed answers to all our questions. We had the best of both worlds in that we were able to walk by ourselves but with the certainty that Hillwalk Tours would help us if we needed it. Our luggage transfers were very efficient. The accommodation was of very high quality and all the hosts were very helpful and welcoming - on several occasions we arrived very wet after walking in the rain, and the hosts offered to dry our gear for us. The food was excellent. We are sure to go on a trip with Hillwalk Tours again. We definitely recommend them for people who want to go on a self-guided tour with everything organised perfectly.

I've walked with several Walking companies but Hillwalk Tours are way and above the best to date. From my first contact with the company by email, I felt assured this was a company which attended to every detail and that this trip (8 day Hadrian's Wall) would be smooth and without anxiety. So it proved. The walking pack included a full, personalised itinerary, a weatherproof map and a handbook about the area - even a waterproof map case! This was waiting for us (as promised) at the first overnight B&B. All the accommodation was of an exceptional standard. Not only the rooms and food, but also the attitude of the hosts who went out of their way to look after walkers. When located off track by more than a few kilometers, local transport had been booked - and it worked. Luggage transport was seamless and invisible. Our experience of the whole package was superb and we completed the holiday with nothing but happy memories.

My wife & I just completed a self guided hiking trip along the Western Way/Connemara in September.
I was somewhat hesitant about booking online & doing a self guided hike but Hillwalk Tours website was great. Staff responded to all questions promptly & helped modify to hike to account for extra days including hikes on Aran Island.
The detailed information on the hike including maps was easy to follow. Accommodations & recommendations were excellent.
This is a great way to see the country side without the crowds associated with typical bus tours. Most days we didn’t see anyone else on the trail and could just absorb the natural surroundings. Exactly what we were looking for in this vacation.
Although we experienced above average rainfall during our hike we dressed accordingly & made an adventure out of some days.
Would highly recommend this vacation to anyone that enjoys visiting less populated destinations, enjoys nature & solitude.
Will definitely be doing another hiking trip in the future.

Rob Roy Way 2020...
It was a very spontaneous idea to hike in Scotland. I asked Hillwalk tours for options, and indeed 2 1/2 weeks after the first e-Mail I was there.
If you want to switch off, need the peace and quiet away from everyday life, then this is exactly the right thing. You hike through a beautiful landscape, often along old railway lines (nice and flat), through Scottish forests or over the moorlands of the Highlands. You can almost always hear the gurgling of streams and the rush of rivers. In small shops or cafes along the way there is a nice chat, a brownie and a tea ...
This has been the 5th time I booked with Hillwalk tours and I'll do again for sure. They managed to keep up the good work even during these difficult times. Many many thanks!

I did a solo Ring of Kerry tour in early July and it was absolutely wonderful. There were no snags because the Hillwalk team had covered every detail. They were very responsive during the trip planning and helped me choose an itinerary that gave me exactly what I wanted in a trip. I will absolutely use Hillwalk tours again to discover new areas.
The team moved my luggage from place to place, which was especially good since I was travelling for several weeks.

Did the Hadrians Wall walk through this company. Service was good, queries answered promptly, information detailed and informative. Although we chose the 'gentle' walk, there were a couple of days not gentle at all, quite challenging in fact.. There was a distinct lack of shops of any description along most of the itinerary so unable to access chemists, supermarkets etc. (We were advised that some places might not be open but not to the extent that was reality!)Some of the B&B's were quite remote and out of the way. Even booking quite early didn't seem to give us much benefit. Felt the price was a bit expensive for what we actually recieved in total.

Dear Sky-Snow-Sun,
Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us. We greatly appreciate all of the feedback we receive as it helps us to continue to improve our tours and keep our information as up-to-date as possible. I am very glad to hear that you found our service good and the information we provide to walkers so useful.
However, I am sorry to hear that you felt your hike was more difficult than you had expected. We base our grading primarily on average daily distance walked, and, we give a range for the expected hiking time, in order to account for different walker speeds. The hiking time also considers the terrain covered, but the time taken for rest stops is not factored in. Weather conditions, both on the day and in the days preceding, can impact the overall walking time and difficulty of the day’s hike. We will, of course, take your comments on board when reviewing our itineraries at the end of the season.
With regard to the lack of shops along the trail, we do try to highlight this as much as possible in the walking pack documents walkers receive prior to their tour, so they can prepare accordingly. We will be updating this information at the end of the season, and we will look at making this clearer, where necessary.
The Hadrian’s Wall Path is one of the most popular walking trails in the UK and as accommodation can be limited in some areas, we try to book the best possible options for our walkers. We prioritise the quality of accommodation with friendly welcoming hosts, availability of a breakfast and evening meal close by over proximity to the trail.
I am sorry that you feel the price of the tour was not in balance with what you received from Hillwalk tours. In addition to B&B accommodation, luggage transfer and walking pack material, there are many other unseen costs which we have to take into account. For example, our team have personally walked all our trails and created the route notes based on the point of view of a walker, our Customer Experience Team put a lot of time and effort into creating a great tour for each of our walkers, including making all the required reservations as well as the creation of each walking pack and all the information contained therein. Also, there is someone on call 24/7 to be of service to you, should you require assistance of any form during your tour.
I hope this gives you a small insight into the work, time and effort we put into creating these happy experiences that have many of our walkers coming back to us year after year.
We hope to welcome you on another tour with us soon! Happy Trails!

We have had to cancel ourDingle Way walk due to the virus. It makes us very sad but I want to say that it has been a total pleasure dealing with Hillwalk Tours. From day one they were right there to answer all questions(however silly) via email and when it became apparent our trip was not going to happen they immediately wired our total refund (minus small deposit) to our bank account in the states.
We are hoping to book again one day & will definitely choose Hillwalk Tours again.
Now, if only American Airlines was even a fraction that fair and easy!
Be well, Ireland. With luck we'll see you yet. ❤️

Hi Taoseno K,
Many thanks for your lovely review! We are sad too for all the walkers who will not be able to fulfill their trips as originally planned due to these unforeseen circumstances. The team here are working hard to rebook tours for those who wish to postpone until later in 2020 or 2021, or else providing the applicable refund amount. We are very grateful to hear that you appreciate our efforts and we look forward to welcoming you on a Hillwalk Tour again in the future!

Hello, can you tell me about the Gentle Antrim hiking tour?
Written 19 February 2020
Good afternoon,
Thank you for your enquiry about a hiking holiday along the Antrim Way. We would be delighted to help you organise your trip!
Antrim offers a terrain which is relatively flat on one hand and yet incredibly spectacular on the other. The route provides some breath-taking scenery of the north-coast of Ireland. Depending on your tour choice, you will have the chance to take a short ferry trip to Rathlin Island and visit the large seabird colony at the West Lighthouse. Other features of the tour include the view of the Dunluce Castle ruins and of course the renowned ‘Giants Causeway’, one of Northern Ireland’s biggest tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You also have the chance to test your mettle on the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, which is truly an experience! These amazing landscapes even inspired Game Of Throne and Viking creators who filmed many episodes of the series in the region.
Our Gentle hiking tours on this itinerary have been designed with the part-time hiker in mind. While you can still expect some climbs, these tours offer the shortest average daily hikes, which in turn means fewer ups and downs. This will give you plenty time to enjoy the sights and scenery, take photos, have a long lunch and, if necessary, negotiate the more tricky sections of a walk.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us through our website.
Warm regards,
The Hillwalk Tours Team

I am sorry to hear that you experienced difficulties getting in touch with us. We certainly are in business and ready to answer enquiries. Perhaps part of the issue was that our phones and the live chat are only available during our office hours (8AM to 4PM, Irish time).
I have checked in with my colleague and we had emailed you on the 11th, 19th and 20th November. If you are still experiencing difficulties receiving our emails, please feel free to contact us using a different email address (if you have one) or give us a call during our office hours.

What kind of shoes and clothing do you recommend for the easy hikes in late June to early July?
Written 9 January 2019
Great question. We hiked in June in chilly, wet and dry hot weather. I chose to take both Keen Austin shoes with me, super light water proof low top shoes, and a pair of light Keen waterproof hiking boots. I used both pairs of shoes depending on the weather and terrain. Also, I was awfully glad that I had brought gaiters because the mud was deep in a number of places. Hope this helps. Have a grand trip!!!

I want to do some hiking- 5-10 miles a day- stopping in small towns along the way. Many of the unguided hikes where they transport your luggage are much longer. The shorter options are guided and expensive. prefer easy-moderate. Does this company offer this type of hike?
Written 7 April 2018
Hi John Y,
Thank you for contacting us. We'd be delighted to help you with a hiking tour.!
All of our tours are self-guided and we have tours starting from 4 days up to 12 days.
Since you would hike to approx 5-10 miles per day, stopping in small towns along the way, I would recommend for you a region such as the Antrim Way in Ireland, or the Camino Frances in Spain.
The Gentle Antrim Tours are the most gentle of our Irish tours, with an average of just 8-10 miles walking per day. Our Gentle Hikes include stops in lovely towns such as Ballycastle, Ballintoy and Portstewart.
The Camino Frances is a great option if you want to stop frequently and enjoy the local cuisine and culture. The short gentle tours include stops in little villages such as Arzua, A Rua and Melide and include an average of just 6-9 miles of walking each day.
We will transfer your luggage each day and it will be waiting for you when you arrive at your next B&B.
For a full list of our tours please check our website and if you would like some more comprehensive information or advice on which tour to pick, please don't hesitate to contact us through our website and one of our Customer Support team will be very happy to help you further.
Kind Regards,
Misja

I am thinking of doing the Wicklow path 5 day gentle hike in March. Are there things to do and see in the towns I would stop at? They seem like small rural places. Is it more of just stopping to eat and sleep or places I would want to spend a bit of time at?
Are there other routes that have particularly interesting towns?
Thank you

We are currently planning a trip to do the Hillwalk Tours Rob Roy hike in August 2018. I wanted to ask about the midges and the horse flys. Were they a problem?
Written 17 January 2018
Hi Susan D
Thank you for contacting Hillwalk Tours. We would be delighted to help you organize a walking tour along the Rob Roy Way in Scotland!
Midges and horse flies occur between May and September. Exactly how heavy the incidence of these little pests is, depends partly on the weather and climate during those months (for example, they prefer damp, hot weather). A breeze often keeps them at bay and midges tend to be most active at dawn and dusk. In any case we highly recommend to bring an insect repellent. The ‘Smidge’ brand of insect repellent is widely available in Scotland. If you are really worried, you could also bring a midge net.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have further questions or you would like to go ahead and book one of our tours, you can do so directly through our website.
Kind Regards,
Misja

How strenuous are the walks in Dingle and Kerry(?) In I Ireland? My husband and I walk a lot, but don't climb mountains! What is the average walk in distance per day?

Hi beverlylayman,
Thank you for contacting Hillwalk Tours. We would be delighted to help you and your husband to organise a hiking tour in Ireland!
We have three different levels of itineraries that we offer: Gentle, Moderate and Challening. For the most part, they follow the same route, but each will cover different lengths each day.
If you look on our our website at the Kerry Way and Dingle Way tours, it will give you information on the average length of a day's hike on our Gentle, Moderate and Challenging tours, and you can also get even more detail in the individual tour itinerary pages. E.g. If you look at the Dingle Way 10-Day Gentle itineray page, it will detail the distance and height covered on each day of the tour.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, you can send us a contact form directly via our website.

I simply don't know how to choose! I will be booking a trip to Ireland with my husband and two college aged sons for this July. I've been to Ireland a few times (and have hiked some of the Kerry Way and some of Dingle Way in the past). It's all so beautiful.
So, if my husband and sons are seeing Ireland for the first time, do you have recommendations. We aren't too into crowds. I see that Dingle is the most popular. If that's so, would you recommend another one?
Written 17 March 2016

Galway, Ireland
Hi Lokismom48,
Thank you for contacting us. The Dingle Way is our most popular region in Ireland, but for good reason! If you have been there before yourself, you know how picturesque the surroundings can be. However, if you are looking for a less busy route, you might be interested in the Beara Way, Wicklow Way or West of Ireland. Or another route to consider would be the Antrim Glens and Coastline. Your sons might appreciate that route if they are fans of the Game of Thrones series, or if any of you are interested in Irish folklore, as you will see the world-famous Giant's Causeway.
If you send an email to us via our website, one of our Operations team members will be more than happy to help you choose the best hike to suit your family's tastes, and they will be able to explain the attractions of each region in detail for you.
Kind regards,

Hi, I have a ? about cell phone service when we need to call the b&b owner to pick us up. We have purchased the out of country package with our carrier, at&t. Wondering how the reception is at the end of the trail those days?
Written 13 September 2015

Hi Kitty,
Thank you for for your question. It's a great one! A lot of people wonder about this.
The mobile reception can depend on many things - which country were you thinking of taking a hike in - Ireland, Scotland or England? And then, within the country, which region? The mobile reception will mostly depend on the region where you are doing your hike, and also on the local carrier who AT&T are linked with, that will be taking your service.
To get more accurate information, you can contact us directly via the contact form on our website, and if you let us know the region you would like to hike in, we will be able to tell you then (based on the end points of each day), how good or bad the mobile reception may be.
I hope this information has been helpful, and we look forward to hearing from you soon!
Kind regards,

Joanne I was wondering if you conducted walks in an area where the midges are less prevalent ? Due to some previous health issues I need to avoid biting insects where I can. A cousin tells me that the East Coast area is better in this regard. Any advice on this? Sue

Hi Sue,
I'm afraid none of our Scottish walks go along the east coast. The West Highland Way & Rob Roy Way go through the central Highlands in Scotland, and the Great Glen Way runs along the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness.
If you need to avoid midges, I would recommend having a look at our tours in Ireland. Midges are not as prevalent in the Irish regions.
If you would like any further information about any of our tours, you can contact us directly via our website.
Kind regards,
