I am so glad I asked Ohm Retreats to put together a tailored journey through Kerala. From the tea plantations in Munnar to the backwaters of Poovar the service was EXCELLENT. Antonella and Bhola were able to help with a lost document problem quickly and professionally. This is why it is so important to have people with local knowledge organising your itinerary. I will book travel with this company again.

This December I went on the best trip of my life to Kerala in India.Kerala is known as the spiritual capital of India on the coast of the South west of India. The first two nights we stayed at the Maritime Hotel in Kochi. The food in the hotel was our first taste of Indian food and it certainly didn’t disappoint for hotel food. In fact the FOOD just got better and better as our trip continued and so did everything even though we started well! Our first real day in Kochi after a nice long sleep. We set off early to visit the Kerala Folklore Museum which has 4 floors of old antiques. We then went to a nearby spice and wellness shop called Munnar spices near the National highway which sells loads of Indian Spices, creams, gels, oils, shampoos and handmade soaps for any ailment one might have, and the prices are reasonable compared to other shops. We then went to visit the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. We had lunch in Fort Cochin hotel which offered us an average buffet for 500 rupees each.We went to the shopping area around the Dutch Palace. It is called Jew Town, a narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the Synagogue. This is by far the best place to go for shopping for local handicrafts, gifts, souvenirs and you can literally pick up some gorgeous bits like Authentic Indian Drums, singing bowels and instruments for yoga practice, scarves and pashminas, gorgeous hand stitched bed covers, throws, pillows and blankets, perfume oils for around 1 euro per bottle which lasts a really long time, Indian Art, statues of famous gods and goddesses elephants, beautiful wooden decorations and boxes, old authentic antiques, household furniture. It is literally a dream for people who like to buy local souvenirs. It is a long street around 200m long with lots of beautiful shops. You can easily spend 2- 3 hours there. There is a lovely cafe at the end of the street which you can get refreshing juices, coffees, lunch and snacks called Craft Cafe. On our last day we popped back and had our lunch there and it was delicious. We set off by private bus towards the backwaters. It took about 2.5 hours to get there. Even though in India the distance is not that far, because of bad infrastructure and traffic it can take a lot longer than it would in a European country. We arrived at our resort called the ABAD Whispering Palms resort- located on the backwaters of Kumarakom. it’s a beautiful resort that’s reasonably priced in comparison to other resorts around. With a beautiful swimming pool overlooking the backwaters, it provides for a stunning sunset. January 1st hangover free I may ad, We decided to take a trip to the local town to do some shopping and get some Ayurvedic treatments. We met a Rickshaw driver along the way who took us around for the majority of the afternoon for 600 rupees (8 euro). The town is quite untouched by tourists, less than Kochi anyway. Our next location along the way was a two day stop off to Alleppey (Alappuzha). Dotting the coastline of the Arabian Sea, Alleppey (also known as Alappuzha) is the oldest planned backwater town of Kerala. We stayed at the Warmth Lake Heaven resort and arrived there by the houseboat. The sunset at Warmth Lake Heaven was definitely the best sunset that I saw my whole time in India. It was breath taking. Next stop was onto the Abad Turtle Beach resort in Allepey which was by far the best resort. It is situated right in at the Arab sea and the resort is spread across 13 acres including a private beach. The rooms are dotted across the gardens. The staff there were just incredible. I never thought Indian beaches could be so beautiful. There was lots to do within the resort and we even took bicycles out one day and cycled around the town which was really great to soak in the local culture. This trip was the trip of a life time and was so well organised from start to finish, we did not have to worry about a thing, everything was taken care of. If you are considering India, please thing about doing it with Ohm Retreats! I give them a 5 star review!

If you want a trip that provides you with the opportunity to visit iconic locations, travel to a number of different cities, experience the religious practices of the Hindu tradition, while staying in a variety of wonderful hotels, where the welcome and hospitality is second to none, then you will love this holiday. All the logistics are managed by the wonderful organisers so transport, accommodation, finding good restaurants, getting tickets to monuments, having interesting cultural experiences, various shopping opportunities or fantastic Ayurvedic massages or an hour with a respected astrologer - all these things are done for you. Which means the best value is found, reliable Ayurvdic practitioners are used, reputable & ethical companies are worked with, tips are paid or organised fairly, the best advice is given in a timely way so that we could each have the choice to do what we preferred to do. Every day began with an optional gentle yoga session, followed by a delicious breakfast with the small group of fellow travelers. Several of the hotels had swimming pools so you could also have a swim to cool off before or after the activities of the day. All the hotels were excellent - clean, hygienic, friendly, providing delicious food for a variety of palates. I don't like spicy food and had some concerns about finding good to suit me - there was no problems. Everywhere had a wide selection of food because there are so many Western tourists, so they're catered for wherever we go. Neither my sister nor I had any problems with food or water ie Delhi Belly, bottled water was provided everywhere we went. Remember to hydrate yourself :) The group travelled in a comfortable coach, driven by a skillful, safe & professional driver. I mention him because, until you are on the road in India, you can't imagine the challenges of driving there - the roads and motorways are shared with the usual traffic as well as cows, pedestrians, mopeds, camels, the famous toc tocs taxis ( to name just a few) ; a good humoured, skillful driver is crucial to your enjoyment of the journeys. I travelled with my sister, who has a visual impairment and uses a white cane to assist with mobility. Bhola, the tour leader, ensured that all our accommodation was accessible for my sister and others with mobility issues. Everyone was encouraged to join all the organised activities but also encouraged to pace themselves so as not to become overtired and to take a day off, chilling out if that's what felt right at any point. There were so many highlights on this trip, every day had at least one spectacular experience or view or meal or ritual. I loved visiting the monkey temple, the Taj Mahal, I loved visiting the elephant sanctuary near the Amber Fort, I loved listening to the spiritual music of India and hearing about the places we visited from our knowledgeable guide. It was amazing to begin each day with a sunrise yoga session, especially those done on the banks of the Ganges River. It was profoundly beautiful to participate in the Festival of Lights in Rhishikesh, place offerings of marigolds in the river, amid the sacred chants & clouds of incense in the run up to Diwali. This holiday offers the best of Northern India but also, in my personal spiritual journey, a place to meditate, a simple life, a rising up of profound gratitude's and rituals to cleanse myself in the sacred waters of the Ganges. I know that this trip had a deep impact on my sister, demonstrating that she has far more resilience, stamina, capacity and courage than she had previously realized. We both have deep gratitude to Bhola & Antonella at Ohm Retreats for enabling us to have this life changing experience. I would love to visit India again and when I do, it will be with Ohm Retreats.

This was a fantastic introduction to Northern India, complete with sunrise yoga on hotel rooftops and on the banks of the Ganges and evening meditation. Bhola was good humoured, genuine and more importantly endowed with endless patience dealing with the constant questions, demands and requests.
