Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Neil McCourt was our tour guide and he was perfect for this tour. He provided so much information about every aspect of the tour. We learned a ton!! Neil was punctual, friendly, and happy to answer questions and explain when people had questions.

Recommend getting the earliest tour you can as the Book of Kells gets very busy early so you don't want to queue to long in the late morning or afternoon.

The Book of Kells itself is a bit underwhelming but the exhibit around it is great and Neil provided tons and tons of great detail to make the entire experience valuable and fun. The library was immense and beautiful. We especially enjoyed seeing the Harp which has a rich history. That was a nice and unexpected gift!

The Dublin Castle wasn't something we could enter at the time but Neil made the most of the gardens and court yard. We spent a good hour, hour and a half there as he told us about Vikings times all the way to the present but in a way that was digestible and relatable to what we were seeing. Great tour to kick off Dublin!

We booked via Viator.

Highly recommend this way to visit the Book of Kells and Dublin Castle. Sure you can just read in a guide book pertinent information, but you miss the flavor of a local's perspective and their personality. Our guide Brian even gave a nice rendition of a Molly Malone folk song as we passed by that statue. He also gave great recommendations on other points of interest not specific to the tour from dining to venues for listening to music away from the tourist crowds.

On this tour our guide was Neil and you would be lucky to have him as your guide. He is very good at sharing his knowledge in a fun way and we enjoyed our time with him.

At the Jameson Distillery Neil coordinated the start of our tour which included one of three types of whiskey drinks after which he passed us off to one of the Jameson tour guides. They have a great touring system where they give you a visual and audio history of the company, a really interesting and interactive explanation of the distilling process and then a tasting with someone who walks you through the process of understanding what the tasting is all about. From a non-whiskey drinker I can honestly say I enjoyed the process from start to finish.

From there I think it was about a 25 minute walk to Guinness, but Neil took us for a stop at the Brazen Head Pub, a landmark Irish Pub as it is officially designated as the oldest pub in Ireland. This was a very cool addition to our tour and we all enjoyed that and the other sights Neil pointed out to us along the way.

Neil advised us the tour at Guinness would be one where we would see every floor briefly, then we would conclude the tour at The Gravity Bar for an included pint of Guinness from possibly the best observation deck in Dublin on the 7th story. After this we would all be free to go back and explore part of the lower floors that had piqued our interest on the way up.

This was another great experience with Neil and we hope you may have the opportunity to take this tour yourself with him one day.

We were with Neil when we went on this tour and if you are fortunate enough to get Neil on your tour you will be glad. He is knowledgeable, articulate and funny and easy to understand, which isnt always the case if you are an American in Ireland.

The Book of Kells was certainly the centerpiece of this tour but there was a lot more wonderful stuff included. Being at the front of the Book of Kells line when it opened provided time for Neil to give us really interesting background that made the exhibition a lot more meaningful than it would have been otherwise. Continuing into the Trinity College Library Long Room was a brilliant second stop though I understand it will be closed some time in 2023.

After seeing a little of Trinity College and taking a bio break we then spent another 60 to 90 minutes at several more interesting stops in the area which include the Dublin Castle exterior, you do not go inside, but also other very interesting places along the way.

Going on this tour really gives you an insiders look at this area of Dublin and is highly recommended to anyone who has the mobility to do a fair amount of walking.

Jackie was super informative and fun! Guinness was packed out but she still kept up with everyone. Jameson was not as hectic. Both tours were super fun, really glad we went and had such an awesome tour guide! There will be some walking involved maybe a mile or so. And it lasted about 4 hours, depending how long you wanted to stay at Guinness. Had enough time to also stop by Brazen Head (oldest pub in Ireland) and have a beer.

Neil was a fantastic guide! Very knowledgeable and will answer any questions you have. I would expect 2.5 hours for the full tour, but overall, we learned a lot. I personally am half deaf and hard of hearing in my other ear, but Neil accommodated me, making it so I could hear him. Thanks a lot for welcoming us!

Our tour guide Neil provided an interesting narrative on Trinity College, the library and Book of Kells, with interesting tidbits we wouldn’t have gotten on our own. Walking tour of the exterior of Dublin Castle provided nice overview of their government. Note to travelers, Dublin Castle not like other castles; more like the exterior of historic government buildings with courtyard.
