I have never written a bad review in my life before, but I had to make an exception with this tour, as it was such a bad experience.
The tour started off badly when our Spanish guide spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why there was too many people on the bus and then had a stand off with a girl who had a receipt proving she had booked and paid for the tour, but was not on the list in the guide’s phone (she had not bothered checking bookings before we got on the bus so this was done in front of everyone). This was so unprofessional and the girl left the bus humiliated and crying, and there was now a terrible atmosphere.
Our tour guide then talked the whole three-hour drive to Castle Ward (Winterfell), but not about Game of Thrones, about Irish history and how the Irish like to have the craic, not to mention why sheep are painted with red marks! As an Irish person it was unbearable for me to hear my history being butchered, and I was actually offended by her explanation of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It is completely unsuitable to go on like this for three hours on a tour for Game of Thrones fans - either the fans are Irish or are tourists who will get this information elsewhere if that’s what they are looking for! I got the impression the guide has never even watched Game of Thrones.
When we finally got to Castle Ward (Winterfell) I thought things would improve but the tour guide just rushed people through a tour of the grounds, which consisted of holding up photos from the Game of Thrones sets. There was no insight into what went into the filming, how they interacted with locals, or behind the scenes stories.
At this point my friend and I couldn’t stand it any longer, so we abandoned the tour, got a lift to Belfast and took public transport back to Dublin.
This tour is just an excuse to cash in on Game of Thrones and no effort has been made to make it an enjoyable experience for fans. You would be better off packing a picnic and driving to the beautiful locations yourself, and dealing with the Castle Ward staff directly if you want to rent costumes and practise archery.
