On Sunday afternoon 29th of August, my sister and her husband brought my 84 year old father and 82 year old mother who has terminal cancer and who unfortunately is at times in pain, as much as we are trying to keep it at bay, to the laurels for dinner. Mam has not been able to leave the house a lot recently so as she was having a fairly good day my sister took the opportunity to get them out of the house to one of our local pubs for some food. Just as they entered the pub unfortunately Mam got some pain which stops her in her tracks and can be very severe. My sister had to get her somewhere to sit quickly. There was lots of empty seats, my brother in law was asked if they had a booking and he said they had not been aware they had to book and there were no notices anywhere to suggest booking was necessary. An extremely hostile female maitre di huffed and puffed but allowed them entry. They sat at a table with no reserved sign and as my sister tried to get my visibly upset mother comfortable they were again approached and told they had to move as the table was reserved. My sister politely asked if they could stay put as she didn’t want my mother to have to move again, she explained several times to the maitre di that my mum was unwell only to be told “well if your mother is unwell maybe she shouldn’t be out”.

Yes, that was her exact words.

“If your mother is so unwell maybe she shouldn’t be out”.

My sister did then move my mum, and again as she tried to settle her in, another extremely hostile manager, a man this time, approached them and told them to leave. Again, my sister pleaded that my mother was unwell and could they just give her some time to get her breath back…but no, in an extremely ignorant manner without once asking if mum was ok, he insisted they leave.

Moral of the story…do not bring your elderly or frail relations to this pub, they will be treated like dirt.

If we weren't in the midst of a pandemic I probably wouldn't be leaving this review, but we are and I am! We were shown to our table by a very pleasant and Covid compliant waitress that's the only positive, the majority of the remaining staff were shockingly non-compliant. The tables weren't 2 metres apart, but we were the only customers in this part of the bar so we didn't complain. When we sat down I noticed a group of 6-8 customers standing at the two tables between the toilets drinking away occasionally walking up to the bar to order drinks which were dropped down by a member of staff. For the hour and a half we were there not one of them ordered food. Out of three barmen one wore his visor on the top of his head and the other after drinking his coffee wiped his mouth with his hand put his face mask back on and served drinks without cleaning his hands. One waitress in particular wore her mask on her chin with the mask being taken off completely when joking with customers. Halfway through our mains customers were seated either side of us, maybe we should have complain but we celebrating an occasion and didn't want to put a dampener on things, instead we quickly finished our meal and left. The food was mediocre, and wouldn't entice you back.

I booked the Laurels for lunch with friends. It was our first time to eat here. I ordered turkey and ham, which was priced at €15 50. My meal came out in a bowl. I got a sliver of turkey and one slice of ham. The rest was mainly mashed potatoes and gravy. I spoke to the waitress who asked if I'd ordered a half portion. I had not. When I asked if I could have more food she said she would 'see what she could do'. I heard no more. After 10 minutes I spoke to the waitress again saying that there was little point in bringing more food at that point as we were all finished eating . When the bill came my meal was billed at €15 50. When I protested I was told that the manager would have to be consulted. He arrived and asked why I had not brought it to anyone's attention earlier! 7€ was then deducted from the bill. I paid €8 50 for what was effectively an infant's meal not to mention the unpleasantness in leaving the table twice to address the waitress and later making my case et again to the manager!
We will not return.

Initially our experience was fantastic. Conor is a top class bartender and an amazing ambassador for what I used to think was a nice pub. He greeted us with a friendly smile and was so helpful and attentive, also Kerry that served our food was so cheerful and could not do enough for us, the food was lovely (over priced for pub grub but you don’t mind paying for good food) That unfortunately is where the good points stop! The on duty manager tonight (29/05/2023) was ignorant, rude, arrogant and basically should have never been but into bar management, i have had bad experiences in pubs before but nothing to mirror how badly we were treated by “the manager” he barked at us at 10:30 in the smoking area that they were closing, then went to the lounge and closed off any empty areas by placing chairs upon tables and speaking to people who appeared to be regular customers in a tone that would make you sick! He clearly is in the wrong trade! If he doesn’t want to stay open “pub” hours then he should not be in the trade! I will be taking this issue up with the actual owners of the Laurels as we spent over €200 in just 4 hours in their pub! I am in a professional position that involves me getting asked on a regular basis for places to have family receptions, unfortunately after tonight’s experience I will be actively telling my clients to boycott the Laurels. Disgraceful management and unfortunately so, because the actual REAL staff were lovely. Shame on you “The Laurels”!!!

Have visited this place a few times now and just find the staff (manager in particular) to be among the most obnoxious I have ever encountered, For example. Went last Monday Bank holiday and the place was about 1/2 to 2/3rds full but badly spaced out so tables were limited. Saw a table and went to take it and a lounge girl practically knocked me out of the way to put a "Reserved" sign on it. Ok. Walked around again and another table became vacant. Again same girl barged by and "Reserved" the table. The first table still had not been occupied and I asked the girl who the table was reserved for and she said the people were at the bar. When I asked her to point them out she pointedly looked at my daughter who is Autistic and said she couldn't be sure. Why people like that are in a customer related business I just do not get
