The Roman Catholic Church of St. Augustine and St. John, more commonly known as John Lane's Church, is one of Dublin's most beautiful churches. It's centrally located in the city and it's beautiful exterior gives a hint of the equally beautiful interior. Inside you will find wonderful stained glass, carvings, and stonework that are impressive. It is very much a Roman Catholic Church in all its glory and grand decor. This church is a must-see when in Dublin.

This enormous Augustinian Catholic Church is a glorious sight to behold. Both side walls are lined by confessionals (no one does penance like the Augustinians). The stonework and wood carvings are amazing and the stained glass windows are breathtaking. I attended Mass there, and even the newly-installed prior seemed overwhelmed by its awesome beauty. Take the ramp to the front door so as not to disturb the homeless man whose encampment blocks the main entrance.

I have lived in Dublin for many years, I am a Catholic and have attended Mass at many churches.
The church of the St Augustine & St Catherine in Thomas Street (Known all over Dublin as "Johns Lane church" after the ancient lane running at the side of the church building) is magnificent to behold both from without and from within.
The church was designed by Pugin and has a wonderfullly tall bell tower which rings out its tunes melodiously over the Dublin rooftops and can be seen from a great distance.
Once inside the church one is overcome with reverence and awe for the beauty of the interior of this house of God.
The magnificent marble altar reredos ( the towered structure rising behind the High Altar) is one of the most beautiful pieces of marble craftmanship it is possible to see anywhere in europe.
This altar is a jewel of Dublin and is lovingly tended and honoured by parishioners.
To the left of the High Altar is the altar and picture of Our Lady of Good Counsel, again beautifully decorated and always with people in prayer and lighting candles in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To the right of the High Altar is the altar & shrine of St Rita of Cascia, Patroness of Hopeless Causes. Many miracles have been wrought through her powerful prayers to God and the votive offerings in thanksgiving to her from people far & wide surround the altar.
I hope if you are near Thomas Street which is only a short walk from Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin, you will pop in to kneel and say a prayer and behold the beauty of the marble reredos and the reflect on the beauty of Gods creation and the faith of those who built this wonder to the Glory of God and not man.

As a long-time admirer of this beautiful Gothic Church designed by Edwin Welby Pugin and opened in 1874, I feel compelled to share my discovery with anyone else willing to have a look.
The church was built by the Augustinian Order who have been in this area of Dublin since the mid 1200s and it stands on the site of the medieval hospital of St. John. Hence the local name for the church , "Johns Lane" ... it is officially called the Church of St. Augustine & St.John the Baptist.
On a historical note; the twelve statues in the tower niches are the work of James Pearse, the father of patriots Padraig and Willie Pearse.
The Church has the highest spire of all Dublin churches standing at over 200 feet.
Inside can be seen some wonderful stained glass from the Harry Clarke studio and by Michael Healy, also some fine work by Mayers of Munich. The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel to the right of the high altar as you enter, dates from 1898. The altar of white Carrara marble is the work of Edmond Sharpe.

Walking along the street, I did not have visiting this Church in our travel plans . But it captured me and beckoned me as I walked past it. I just had to go in and see it!

I am glad I did. Definitely worth a visit! It is beautiful!the stained glass is just lovely.

The name of the Church shown on the sign outside is St. Augustine and St. John the Baptist Church but it is also known as John’s Lane Church!

I love this church because even though it is situated in the epicentre of Dublin city, once I go through the doors, immediately I am surrounded by the quiet and there is a feeling of reverence and awe in this beautiful old church.
It reminds me so much of the cathedral beside me grandparents home in Sligo town and therefore I step back in time and feel close to home when I pray here.

Mass is at 11 and 1pm daily, not sure if there is an earlier mass, am sure there is and not sure of the Sunday listings. Christmas Eve mass is very special here and the Nativity crib is something so peaceful and special.
The sacristy is accessible from the altar for purchasing religious items and mass cards for sale that cover EVERY occasion.
Good for my soul to visit this special church.

John’s Lane Church was impressive. The church is massive, but having said that, the outside is not as decorated or eye-catching as some of the other churches and cathedrals in Dublin. It is inside that John’s Lane is so amazing – a big church that is absolutely filled with colour and artwork. The scale and range of decoration is staggering. Certainly from a photographers point of view, this church was one of the best churches I visited in all of the United Kingdom – highly recommended.

The intricate stained glass windows are amazing. The altar is beautiful. To the right of the altar is a little side room that is stunning. We just happened to be walking by after the Guinness tour and I am very glad we took the time to step inside.
