About
The Douglas Hyde Gallery, founded in 1978, became independent of Trinity College in 1984, and for some years afterwards we were the only publicly-funded gallery in Ireland that regularly exhibited contemporary art. Our exhibition programme was wide-ranging and eclectic, including shows by major international artists as well as by emerging Irish artists. More recently, the development of contemporary art exhibition programmes by other galleries and museums in Dublin has meant that the Douglas Hyde Gallery's role has changed. While our general direction remains the same, and although we still hold exhibitions by major figures in the contemporary art world, the programme has become more focused than before, frequently engaging with art that has been marginalized, and with artists, both from Ireland and abroad, who have not yet become well-known or who have been overlooked. We also regularly hold small exhibitions of ethnographic and craft artefacts in Gallery 2. The Douglas Hyde Gallery publishes small books and catalogues that are known and distributed all over the world, and occasionally hosts musical events.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I would recommend visiting the Douglas Hyde Gallery if you're in Dublin. It's a modern art gallery on campus at Trinity College.
The exhibit I visited was called "Fatal Act" and focussed on war, the bombing of Hiroshima, and more specifically on Claude Eatherly's role in the bombing and his guilt afterwards. It's free and very interesting!

We visited the DHG and the exhibition comprised a strange film shown in a quirky hut built within the gallery and a display of photos taken over a couple of days in Dublin.
The photos did not, in our view, tell a narrative, but that might be down to the limited time we spent there or our ignorance.

I read and heard lots of criticism on Douglas Hyde Gallery. To be fair, I really liked it. It is true that there is no explanation of the exposed paintings. However, they are fine examples of contemporary art. Moreover, entrance to the gallery is free because it is inside the Arts Building in Trinity College Dublin. Also, from time to time, some paintings rotate. For this reason, the Hyde Gallery is interesting also for those who already saw it. Overall, I think it is well worthy a visit, if you are in Dublin.

We made sure to visit this gallery during our trip, having heard such good things about the space and its exhibitions. There were two exhibitions when we visited. One was by a Toronto-based artist called Abbas Akhavan and the other by Mona Hatoum. We had heard of Hatoum before but not of Akhavan--always great to discover a new artist. Both exhibitions seemed to us to resonate in the current cultural and political climate, but also incredibly beautiful works of art in and of themselves. Wonderful space, also.

We visited this gallery on a Wednesday afternoon, not knowing that they held an informal tour of the exhibitions then. The staff were friendly and helpful. The exhibitions were lovely and we enjoyed browsing the books and magazines in the bookshop upstairs. Wonderful space to spend an afternoon in Dublin!

The Douglas Hyde Gallery is at the entrance to the Arts Block in Trinity and you can visit it while you go to The Book of Kells or The Science Gallery! It has two rooms and usually has two contrasting exhibitions which compliment each other! The current exhibition features a load of seaweed all laid out on the floor to make a garden! Very mindful!

DHG is an intimate and authentic contemporary Dublin experience. In the heart of the tourist district, facing the historical Book of Kells, it is actually possible (and free!) to experience Dublin's awesome relationship with contemporary art both within Ireland and outside its boarders. Yes, it is small, but that offers its visitors a chance for a truly personal experience, where one can take their time to get to know both the critical perspectives of the artists and the curators. It's also free and there is no need to book in advance. More than that, it's been an incubator for internationally-renowned artists - so if you want to see what's cutting edge, critically outstanding, and progressive - then it is well worth the visit.
