Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

This was relatively inexpensive, so we were not expecting much. The tour guide did surprise us though. We went into 2 of the crypt hallways to view the family crypts. The guide was very educated and animated. There were 5 of us, and one gentleman...More

Looking for something different and to get you out of Temple Bar? Take a stroll along to St Michan's Church to meet an 800 year Mummy. A short tour (so the kids won't get bored) but only 6 euros, our Guide took his time explaining...More

Bram Stoker's mother is buried in the grounds and he is supposed to have got his inspiration for Dracula in the crypts. I spoke to people who went there as schoolchildren who have never forgotten their trip down. I don't know how short people at...More

Such an interesting tour. Short but well worth it. The guide was very knowledgeable and fascinated by the subject of the mummies.

Small church with tour of the underground crypts. Very cool to see who is buried there and the mummies seen in the crypts. They leave the buried alone and only show what nature has revealed.

The church itself is quite lovely - small and well kept and yet filled with history. The crypts are quite incredible - unlike anything else you’ve likely ever seen or experienced. The guide was full or knowledge, but also added humour and zest. He was...More

We walked to St. Michan's from the other side of the river to see the "mummies" in the crypt. The beautiful little church is nearly hidden by all the offices, etc. around it. It didn't take much to understand the visitors to the crypt helps...More

Fascinating to visit but not handicap accessable. Not for the claustrophobic or those uncomfortable with seeing mummified human remains.

This was a location my husband and I wanted to see 2 years ago - tour guide was knowledgeable and engaging. Be careful going down the steps to see the crypts - not for the faint of hear.

It was 3 or 4 Euros this year. Call ahead to make sure they'll have a tour guide available when you wish to go or you won't get to see the crypt.

Yes, there are tours throughout the day, never any formal times, just present yourself at the door and ask, you might have to wait no more than 30 minutes for a tour to start. Not sure when they close.
