Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

To tell the truth - I didn't want to take this tour. I'm so glad that I did - the tour guide was absolutely perfect for the event. Very informative in a friendly, humorous and ghoulish manner. Highly recommended (don't miss) attraction.

Only had to wait a few minutes after buying my ticket to be greeted by the quirkiest and coolest tour guide in Dublin. This guy has a wacky personality that makes you instantly love him! He was so friendly and knowledgable about the crypts, which were awesome. It's an amazing bone-chilling experience to climb down into the crypts and see... More

Unfortunately the day I went, the tour guide was not there due to some scheduling mix-up and he was so late that I left after waiting about 70 minutes. It was still possible to see the little church, but apparently one couldn't enter the crypt without the guide which left an Australian couple who were leaving for home that day... More

If we aren't freaked out by the macarb then go on this tour. It is very atmospheric and very memorable. I remember visiting when I was a child and it really stuck with me, so wanted to bring my kids. The tour guide has been doing this tour for many years and really taps into the crowd. Very interested.

Had a great tour with Peter today, a really funny guy! Very cheap (€4 for students, €6 for adults) and a pretty cool hidden spot. Right beside the Jameson distillery so a good spot to combo with.

The church upstairs isn't much. The draw here is the crypt and the chance to rub the finger of the skeleton in the cage. It's supposed to bring you luck. But NO pictures. Or at least don't get caught taking one. Supposedly an inspiration to Bram Stoker.

I'd found a tourism card descriving St Michan's on the floor or a bar during a previous visit, so decided to go along with my wife on our weekend break in Dublin. It was fantastic. Lovely little historic church, close to the city centre. We had a funny and irreverent guide, and the main event was of course the amazing... More

Beautiful old church. The Viking Museum is proximate and worth the entry fee. Climb the stairs to the top of the tower and see the town from a rook's point of view.

One of the more frequently overlooked places of interest in Dublin city is St. Michan’s church and crypt, located near the Four Courts and the Jameson Distillery in the newly renovated old market-area of Smithfield. The church was originally founded in 1095 by the Danish colony in Oxmantown, near the Four Courts, and was named after a Danish bishop. One... More

Not too much to see... it can be done within 30 mins, start to finish, but the guide is definitely entertaining and very informative. .... And the mummies are very interesting to have a look at!
