A must-see for history lovers, with great tour guides!
We visited Glasnevin in March 2023 and had a really great experience. Our tour guide, Daniel, was to thank for such an informative and peaceful guided tour through the cemetery. While being respectful and knowledgable, Daniel also kept our group engaged. We couldn't believe how quickly time flew by! Having a great tour guide really makes you feel good about an experience. Highly recommend having a guided tour around the cemetery, it is affordable and makes a huge difference to hear the history live.

    Wonderful tour,
Had a terrific tour of Glasnevin Cemetery this week! A big thank you to our guide Lauren who expertly detailed the lives of some of the most distinguished as well as some of the the most obscure occupants now resting at Glasnevin. We were treated to a wonderful glimpse into the lives these individuals led and how the events of the day shaped their experiences. Go raibh mile maith agat a Lauren.

Great way to learn about Irish history
Amazing experience! Our guide, Lauren, was really knowledgeable and told the stories of many key figures in Irish history, although at times quite tragic, in a fun and engaging way. The cemetery itself is absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend taking the guided tour if you wish to learn more about Irish history. At the museum there's a great little book and gift shop where you can find interesting book about Ireland that I didn't see in shops in town. I would give this place and Lauren 6 stars if I could.

visit together with Botanical Garden, recommended
we did visit without tour guide and just stolled around. The old part with is very nice to see. Our main focus was the Botanical Garden around it, but the graveyard is a must see within that area. A nice break from the city tour.

Highly recommend a guided tour for a good dose of interesting history!
Really recommend! I took a tour this week and greatlyy enjoyed it, plus walked away with a lot more history than I anticipated. Our tour guide, Niall, was knowledgable, funny, and engaging, which made this my favorite activity in Dublin to date. Thanks, Niall!

Try the guided Irish History tour
Beautiful place. Tons of history here. The guided Irish history tour was great. Our guide, Elena, was excellent. She had a lot of knowledge to impart in 45 minutes about the famous Irish patriots buried here. At the end, she mentioned that it was only her second time doing the tour but you’d never have known it. She was great! Highly recommend it. Also Botanical Garden is right next door

    Great Tour
This is a huge cemetery. Many interesting people buried there. The guided tour is excellent. Our guide was Elaina and she was very good; friendly and had lots of good, amusing stories to share. If you are looking for something different, away from the crowds of tourists in Dublin, this is a good choice. Inexpensive as well.

Really enjoyable, second time doing the tour
Our guide Lauren gave a lovely tour around the cemetary for an hour and a half. Well worth it to get more info about some of the more famous gravesites. The tower is also worht the additonal time to climb some amazing views of Dublin city on a clear day. We also ate in the cafe, a little pricey but thats expected in tourist spots, food was freshly made and very tasty. Definately recommend for a few hours trip

    An unexpected pleasure to tour
The cemetery serenely evokes the modern history of Ireland through the persons of common people and famous patriots. The little museum is very cleverly done. The 60+ minute tour is excellent; mine was delivered with real poise and vibrancy by a young woman conducting her first tour.

Glasnevin Cemetery, also known as Ireland's National Cemetery, is located a few kilometres out of town and next door to the National Botanic Gardens (also worth a visit). It's one of the most interesting places we visited during our four days in Dublin.

The cemetery has been the resting place for locals of all denominations since it opened in 1832. It also holds the graves and memorials of several notable figures including patriots Daniel O’Connell, Michael Collins and Countess Marckievicz, English poet Gerard Manley Hopkins and Irish folk singer Luke Kelly.

But it's the unknowns in the Angels Plot that moved me the most. Established in 1968 as a resting place for stillborn infants, the Angels Plot is now the burial place of over 16,000 babies and infants. For many years Glasnevin was one of the few cemeteries that allowed stillborn and unbaptised babies to be buried in consecrated grounds. Reading some of the inscriptions here, including those which hint at multiple stillbirths within single families is heartbreaking.

Other areas of note in the cemetery are the Republican plot where many of those killed or executed during the fight for independence were interred, and the Commonwealth Plot, with memorials to Irish service personnel. If you are walking around the outer pathway, look out for the watchtowers on the boundary. The towers were erected in the mid 1850s to prevent bodies being snatched from the cemetery for anatomical use in medical schools!

The cemetery is a tranquil place to walk around and the blossoms now out on the ornamental trees add a softness to the grey, stone graves. You could spend quite a bit of time here reflecting on the lives of those laid out before you in graves simple, elaborate and, in many cases, unseen.

We visited as a family 19,16 and 10 yr old children on Tuesday 2nd April. Firstly, I had got my dates wrong and had actually booked the Monday ,but they were so accommodating and let us join the same tour on the Tuesday. So I was immediately impressed.
We visited the tourist information area first, well presented and interesting.
Our tour guide was Ultan. He was simply excellent. Strong voice carried well. Great story telling. Enthusiastic. Fun. It was simply fantastic.
I studied 19th century Irish history for A level so to revisit the history of O’Connell and Parnell was evocative. But what pleased me most was how enthralled my children were in hearing the stories from our history. The tour was a real mix of young and old and I could see everyone was enjoying the experience. It helped that the sun was shining.
Glasnevin is beautifully tended. It is quite powerful to know that it is still a fully functional graveyard, indeed the throes of You’ll Never Walk Alone was echoing from a funeral as we asked around .
I have been to visit Dublin many times, but this was my first visit to Glasnevin . The 5 star reviews here are all worth it. Even if you are not a history lover, you can’t help but get reeled in by the story telling.
Thank you Ultan, you brought history to life.

Glasnevin is a tour I've been saying we should do for a long time and it didn't disappoint! The grounds are beautiful, great visitor center and café. A big thank you to our tour guide Niall O Man, he has such a wealth of knowledge and great story teller, he had us captivated for the whole trip. The man that gave the re-enactment of Pearse's speech at funeral of Rossa was brilliant, made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. There is so much history in the one place its just amazing, will definitely go again.
