About
The brave, the bold and the desperate. Follow in the footsteps those who fled the Famine. The Jeanie Johnston tells the story of the thousands of Irish people who fled the Famine and embarked on a treacherous voyage in the hope of a better life in North America. Step on board and you will be transported back in time to join them on their gruelling journey. The tour takes approximately 50 minutes and is led by one of our knowledgeable guides. The tour begins with a walk around the upper deck, where you will see the majestic masts, admire the craftsmanship and learn about the ship’s history. Located on Custom House Quay, just past EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel.

The tour of the Jeanie Johnston is a highlight of our stay in Dublin. This authentic replica of the ship that carried passengers to the new world during the Irish Famine was wonderfully immersive and gave a wonderful understanding of the hardships endured by those hoping for a new, better life. Our guide was wonderfully knowledgable and was able to answer questions as well as give her prepared remarks. The tour is an hour, but we could have spent much more time exploring the ship and reading the material available. Don't miss this!

As someone whose ancestors left Ireland during the Famine, this was a really eye opening tour. It helped me see what they went through to reach new opportunities. I learned so much and have a greater appreciation for Irish migrants and their struggles to survive.

We wrapped up our last day in Ireland with an interesting tour on the Jeanie Johnson. Our guide, John, was excellent. He told a poignant story of The Great Hunger along with the story of the boat itself. You left with the knowledge that you were in a special place of commemoration to a key story in Ireland's history.

The only reason that I gave this a 4 versus 5 star is that there is a bit of standing and listening versus moving around the boat. We absolutely got to see all of the accessible areas of the ship and learn the stories, I just thought there was going to be more movement as we toured. There were a few kids on our tour, as well as our own, who were all troopers, but it was a bit much for them. My expectation with a guided tour is more movement and talking.

Again, John was excellent, the information shared was well done, and the boat was an experience.

This takes the form of a guided tour round the Jeanie Johnston sailing ship - a working replica of the real one (which sank) which was one of the ships used to transport irish famine migrants to Canada and the US under appalling conditions in the 1850's. Our guide was Jerry who managed to make the one hour tour tour amusing with light hearted anecdotes in spite of not skimping on the grim reality of this appalling story of the abuse of the irish famine victims by the British (I came in for some light hearted joshing on account of being the only British in the group). Jerry achieved the almost impossible feat of turning what could so easily have been a grim experience into an entertaining and fact filled and above all thought provoking visit. The visit is made slightly easier on the conscience in the knowledge that not one person died on the 16 trips the Jeanie Johnston made.

We arrived with 5 mins to spare and got worried that we would miss the tour due to a family in front of us taking ages in the ticket office, however we needn't have worried as the ticket lady was also the tour guide and we were in the meeting point already. Only downside was that it was raining quite heavily and there was no cover whilst we waited for the tour to start. We bought tickets as a combo with Epic and did one after the other. There were several families booked onto the tour, who arrived late, but we started and they joined late, this did not impact on our tour time at all. Our tour guide was fantastic, I wish I remembered her name, she even gave my partner a bottle of water when he was coughing due to long covid. She engaged well with the children and adults alike and made sure everyone was okay. The tour itself was eye opening. And very interesting, it was great to see the conditions that people lived in during the famine journeys. There was cover on the ship so we didn't need to worry too much about the rain. Out of all of the activities we did in Dublin, this was our favourite!

The guides were so friendly and helpful - great conversations, extremely knowledgeable about the topic, and really good energy too:) John told us many stories about the ship and the famine, both shocking and touching at the same time. Bought the tickets together with the EPIC museum and it was so worth it :)

My own ancestors emigrated to Australia as teenagers in the 1860s and I was interested in see this ship as it is roughly the same era.

The ship is definitely worth seeing and it was a very interesting and quite moving experience and brings home how hard life was for people in that era. My daughters in their 20s said they learned a lot.

The guide Eoin (sp) spoke very well and told the story engagingly.
