I have had the pleasure of seeing ROBERT GOGAN's comic jaunt through James Joyce's famous novel Ulysses, a book that I've attempted to read on numerous occasions but failed to finish, now I can say I understand the book much better as it so well explained by Robert . . . . its a blooming great show full of laughs, one liners and wit, its a MUST for anybody that loves James Joyce and is a DUB ! and wants to understand Ulysses.

LIke a little boy, Gogan delights in pointing out all the lewd acts, any sexual inuendo ("Get it, Ladies? Wink wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean... Sorry, Joyce means?" Hilarious!), or fecal droppings throughout the text, while utterly dismissing all that accompanies these moments. As such, he follows in the footsteps of all the critics who dismissed Joyce at the time and pointed out this bawdiness but replaces their displeasure with his own pleasure.

That Ulysses was a ground-breaking novel which put Joyce among the world's leading writers is not in dispute. Neither is the fact that the book has fuelled academic and literary debate forever since it appeared. But sadly, for the non-specialist who bought it casually, it has remained a briefly opened and soon closed book. This show will send you back to try again in the new-found knowledge that Ulysses is laced through with wit, humanity and satire; peopled with memorable characters and, despite dealing with only a single (long) day, covers the deepest of human emotions from birth, to maturity to loss of love or life. My Gogan shows due respect to the genius of Joyce but he is not in awe of him. Instead he gives us an overview of Bloom's Day, letting us see the wood and not just trees, while dipping regularly into the original text ending with a powerful extract from Mollie's soliloquy. This is a show to relish for anyone who wants to appreciate Joyce and his Ulysses.

Thank you EireDude for your extensive review. You are a very keen observer! You're quite correct when you said that I'm not in awe of Joyce. I do believe that he was one of the greatest geniuses in forging, moulding and expressing the English language, but I don't personally believe that EVERYTHING he wrote was pure genius. But I'm very proud that he was an Irishman (a Dubliner!) and that he wrote almost exclusively about his native city. For such a little nation we've produced some heavy-hitters in our time! Thank you once again for your review. Robert

Great show, Mr Gogan gives background and drifts through Blooms day presenting an array of characters with the clever use of minimal props in a really energetic and enjoyable way, GL.

Hello Garrett L. Thank you for your review. Yes I do use a set of minimal props. It allows me to perform in some very small and unusual settings, as well as the larger ones! Thank you again. Robert

Dear Z8897LQdeniseb, thank you for your review. I'm happy to read that you got something from the show. And the most important aspect for me is that people come away with an appreciation and better understanding of Ulysses. I hope that the experience encourages some people to read it! Thank you again. Robert

Hi Donal8, thank you for your kind review. I enjoyed performing at the Mountshannon Arts Festival and the organisers and committee were very helpful. I also enjoyed the 'craic' in the local bar afterwards!

Went to see this show last night and for the first time I now understand what the book is about. Robert made the characters come alive..... He really can switch with the flick of a Bowler Hat! It was quick, funny, a tad naughty and well worth going to see.

Hi Rhone, thank you for your review. I don't know where I'd be without my Bowler Hat on stage! In Ulysses it's described as "Plasto’s high grade ha". It's presumed that the 't' is omitted from the description because the label is either torn or creased. Typical Joycean detail! Thank you again for your review. Robert

Attended this show with some reservations I’ve made several attempts to read Ulysses and am reasonably familiar with the story, it seemed an interesting way to mark the approach of Bloomsday. Robert Gogan is clearly a Joyce scholar and had the temerity to punctuate the original in his version Ulysses Remastered.
The Show is hilarious, beginning with “stately plump Buck Mulligan” and ending with Molly Bloom’s soliloquy. The author/actor takes the audience on a gallop around Dublin, describing the characters, streets and buildings, supporting his play with readings from the original text. And it works few of the audience were familiar with the book but all felt they had grasped the story and might even read the original.
Don’t wait for Bloomsday if you go and see for yourself.

Hi KerrySullivan, thank you for your review. I think that a lot of people have reservations about attending my show, fearing that it might be academic and 'above their heads'. But, of course, as you discovered, it's nothing like that! I know that many people who attended my show expressed an interest in reading the book and that pleases me greatly. Thanks again for your review. Robert

Robert Gogan is a one man show on every Wednesday evening at the Stag’s Head. I was concerned as like most people I have never read Ulysses but knew it was a difficult book. Gogan summarises the story by acting out so many of the parts and giving you a flavour of the humour and bawdiness in Joyce. He is a dynamo and a great character actor who knows his Joyce (has written his own version with punctuation which makes it more readable). The time flew and I’m now going to tackle the book!

Highly recommended - Mr. Gogan does an excellent job bringing the book to life; his annotated version of Ulysses is worth getting also.

I don’t know what show Liam80 attended, but it couldn’t have been my show, because Strolling Through Ulysses! is most definitely NOT ‘geared’ towards children! James Joyce’s great novel is liberally sprinkled with adult-oriented themes and situations, and contains some explicit and amusing descriptions of certain bodily functions. I incorporate a number of these elements into my show. I don’t think that there is anything in the show that would shock or surprise the average teenager over 15 years of age. But, below that age, parents might have to answer some curious questions from inquisitive children in relation to some of the content of my show, so it’s no harm to suggest that some parental guidance would be appropriate. I’m sorry that I can’t be more specific, but it all depends on how much you’re prepared to intentionally expose your children to adult-oriented material, and at what age. I hope that I’ve answered your question. Robert Gogan

Hi I see that during Bloomsday Festival week there seem to be two different venues for the show. Can you confirm if this is correct as I know people who are interested in going.

Hi Achill Shore View. Thank you for your query.
I'll be performing my show every evening during Bloomsweek (13-17 June, including Bloomsday) at 7pm in The International Bar, Wicklow Street. However, on Bloomsday itself (June 16) I'll also be performing in The Stag's Head Bar at 1pm. It's handy that the two venues are just around the corner from each other!
The above shows are in addition to the regular Sunday performances in The Stag's Head Bar, at 1pm and 7pm.
I hope this answers your question and is not too confusing!
Robert
