- Stormpetrel2011Edinburgh, United Kingdom115 contributionsPerfect immersive historyWonderful. If you have only time for one museum or historical visit in Dublin, this is it. Not only was the GPO in O'Connell Street the focus of the 1916 Easter Rising, it's now the focus for those wanting to study 20th century Irish history. The museum contains any amount of artefacts, but there also audio-visual displays which hit the mark perfectly. I knew quite a bit of Irish history already. What I appreciated was the accuracy of the commentaries. There's a clear explanation of what the issues were, how the Easter Rising was seen at the time, and how it was NOT seen: for instance, the Irish Civil War in 1922-23 was never about the six counties and partition – that's a later myth from the 1950s and 1960s onwards. Watch for the bukllet holes in the pillars at the front.Hi Stormpetrel2011, Thanks for taking the time to review your experience and we appreciate your endorsement of what is presented in the museum. - Tricia HDublin, Ireland6 contributionsCivil War Centenary TourWe did the Civil War Centenary tour as part of the Dublin Festival of History. Our tour guide Sean gave a very informative tour with explanations of previous historical events such as 1916 and War of Independence which led to the Civil War. The tour was full of brilliant little gems of interest. He had a very engaging style of presentation and was always willing to take questions from the tour participants. Would definitely recommend the tour and especially Sean.Hi 265triciah, Thanks for your five star rating and complimentary comments about Sean's tour. - saul gTel Aviv, Israel1,221 contributionsGreat .Originally built as the main post office (GPO), in early 19th Cent., in Georgian architecture style. During the Easter Rising of 1916, the GPO served as the headquarters of the uprising's leaders. Today, the beautiful building still serves as a post office and it holds an interesting small museum .Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- Garrett PAylesbury, United Kingdom257 contributionsImportant historical venueBeing a fan of Sean O Casey plays, I wanted to walk along O Connell Street and see for myself the GPO Building and the bullet holes within the building exterior and it's pillars. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a museum within the building which really helped in filling in the blanks of my knowledge of the 1916 Easter Uprising. I really enjoyed the experience (the museum NOT the Uprising) and would certainly recommend it as part of your visit to Dublin. Next door to the museum, within the same building, is a functioning, beautiful looking post office which is worth a look too.Hi 870garrettp, Thanks for taking the time to review and great to hear that you found the museum experience to be worthwhile. - L HChicago, Illinois1,863 contributionsIrish historyA must-see for anyone interested in the history of Ireland/its struggle for freedom. An audio tour device is included with the €15 entry fee; staff are very nice/helpful. The exhibit is laid out well with good lighting/lots of different types of artifacts; there’s a small gift shop. Of further interest may be “The Wind that Shakes the Barley”; a film focused on the battle that took place in this post office (bullet holes from which still exist on the façade and nearby monuments).Hi 314LH, Thanks for taking the time to review your visit and great to get an endorsement that we are a must-see for those interested in history. The building itself is interesting inside and I was there at Christmas and it was dressed up for the holidays. The Museum is about the Irish fight for Independence and was educational and had an interesting movie. I liked itDon't expect a big museum, it's nothing more than a room in which you can find informations and you can learn more about the easter rising (1916) when Irish men and women fought for become indipendent from the English . What I loved the most was the movie displayed every 15 minutes. At time of my visit I already knew some informations about the Easter rising so I have found this museum very engaging.Hi Salvotraveler, Thanks for taking the time to review your visit and great to hear that you found the experience informative.Written 2 February 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 January 2024

The exhibits and the stories told create an unforgettable experience. The museum and the facilities are quality including the cafe upstairs which is great value. Do - take the audio set. The building itself is beautiful, however, I payed 30 euro for two people which i think is pricey comparied to other museums in dublin. In my opinion there really wasnt alot of history to see, the museum is over one floor which took us 20mins to go round. a little disapointed. Cafe is nice though.

Hi Dani,
Many thanks for your review. I am sorry to read that you were disappointed in your visit. We have a movie which lasts 19 minutes, I hope you didn't miss this. It is the highlight of the visit. We do recommend 45 mins to see everything, many people spend over 1 hour reading through the touch screens and learning about the artefacts.
If you visit again, take one of our complimentary audio guides, visitors find them to be very useful!
Kind regards,
Ciara

We paid €37 for the tour for a family of 4, I certainly didn't think it was worth this. It was cold, poorly lit, had poor signage and we thought that there was going to be another level but discovered it was only a cafe upstairs. Give it a miss, head to kilmainham jail.

We went on the tour yesterday after browsing through the museum. The museum exhibits are very informative and interesting. The tour, led by Megan, was outstanding. She was extremely knowledgable and had lots of really interesting asides that very much humanised the historical information. She is clearly very passionate about history and this contributed to a very coherent narrative. Couldn’t recommend the tour strongly enough.

Bearing in mind I paid 10.50 (euro) as a concession to get into the GPO Museum and Kilmainham Gaol is free - I felt a little short changed. First the positives, it was interesting to see behind the build façade (the court yard), as this gives some perspective on the actual size of the GPO and I did wonder what all the rooms were used for. The interactive film about the 1916 battle was also 'okay'. Overall though, the museum lacked. Talking head academics on screen? I can watch that anywhere. I would suggest an interactive/virtual immersive special effects mechanism, a little bit like the Viking Museum in Stockholm, where you get on a ghost train like car and it takes you around a circuit to interact with the history. I would want to see and hear the voices of the ordinary volunteers as they battled the British, as if one is actually immersed in the time. I would want a surprise as though I was inside the GPO when it was shelled, I would also like to see the volunteers diving for cover right in front of me as if I was actually there - not forgetting the sounds of the 13,000 British troops marching from Dún Laoghaire. Get the gist?

We attended a guided tour of the museum, and Nathan's knowledge and passion of this subject really shone through. He explained WHY the rebellion came about, what Ireland was like in the early 1900s, and what happened since, as well as some fascinating details that many might have missed or who may have been airbrushed from the history books. The significance of this building in Irish history cannot be underestimated, and Nathan explained why it was chosen for the rebellion.
The museum is in the basement of the working GPO building, and comes back to street level to a display of what's happened in Ireland - south and north - up until modern times. This included the Anglo-Irish agreement. Nathan enjoyed answering questions from visitors, am sure that we'll see him presenting on tv soon.
Very good value for money, and very highly recommended.

This is a very informative exhibit. A well put together series of events, although one can have a bit of difficulty finding #4 and #17 (we found them, but it took a bit of searching). The sequence of events are easy to understand even if you are not very familiar with Irish history. We recommend visiting the Dublin Castle before visiting this exhibit as it will help with some context. We spent a coupe of hours in this museum and it was time well spent. We also found the price of admission to be very high in comparison to other historic venues in the city.

The GPO, restored in 1929 on the ground floor is pretty impressive, the Museum on the floor below is well worth the entry charge to get a vivid account of the Easter 1916 uprising and its hugely important legacy - the freedom of the what is the Irish State nowadays. there is a good audio guide with plenty of in-depth additions to the main script. Displays are interesting if not exhaustive and the loop of film with Gaellic and English sub-titles alternate showings is well worth the 15 minutes it lasts. My only complaint is that I wanted more. For a excellent introduction to he Easter uprising this was superb; for the events leading up to it and the general Irish history it is scant but useful. For the aftermath, it is again a little concise but useful. I recommend you combine this with a visit to Kilmainham Gaol. Well worth a visit and worth the entry fee.

As a family of 3 adults we went on the guided tour today Saturday.
Our guide shared lots of wonderful information on the 1916 Rising in a clear and logical order
The tour took 1 hour and you could go back through the exhibits again afterwards.
There is an audio guide available if you can't avail of the tour and 2 videos to sit and enjoy too.
I would recommend the self guided tour for children as they can go at their own pace and engage with the interactive displays on the exhibition.

Well worth the ticket price. They give you headphones for a self guided tour. Recommend going early because the museum is fairly small and it's nice to go when it's not too crowded. The gift shop connected with the museum has a selection of books and material for follow up.

The GPO Museum Tour is quite comprehensive. It’s not often the museum is itself the site of the history it portrays but this is the case for the GPO Museum Tour. You can see bullet holes in the columns in front of the building.
We booked a guided tour and our tour guide Abby was a font of knowledge. There were 6 of us on the tour and we peppered her with questions for nearly 90 minutes. She rarely was without an answer. I highly recommend the GPO Tour.
