The drive from Portsalon to Fanad Head is spectacular with highlight being the views across Ballymastocker Bay. The lighthouse at Fanad Head was actually close when I arrived (7pm) so I only got to look around outside. However it was still a beautiful place to visit. Must return for a tour of the inside of lighthouse some day …

After leaving our B&B and continuing our exploring we saw a lighthouse in the distance and followed the roads to get to it and we were were not disappointed. Fanad Head lighthouse is in a very scenic location on the North coast of Donegal. It's high up on a cliff jutting out into the water. It was built around 1816. There is a visitors centre and coffee shop as well as a hotel. You can go on a guided tours of the working lighthouse and you can also climb to the top of the tower. You can even book a stay in the original light keepers cottages which would be interesting and a little piece of history. The day we were there, we spoke to a fellow who was taking his drone for a test run as he was filming a wedding to take place later that day. He showed us the footage, spectacular!…
