The Dursey cable car is currently closed in 2022 for upgrades - I'm not sure what it will be like once the new one is in place - but this is the only cable car in Ireland and such an experience. it goes from the mainland to an island - which is not inhabited - but farmers do have animals grazing on the island - sheep and cows - so dogs are not allowed - but if you are looking for something different to experience - this is the one for you.
I'm not into sky diving or bungy jumping - so this is as far as I'd go to float on air..
Looking forward to when this re-opens so I can experience it again.
Note :- the roads in this area are very narrow - so not good for big vehicles e.g. Campers unless you are well used of driving big vehicles on country roads..

I had read that the Cable car was closing on April 1st. I knew I had to go, as I just know the new version due in November will have none of the creaking, lurching, rubbing shoulders with like minded souls that the current cabin has. I was not disappointed! The lady running the show was helpful, friendly and an icon of hospitality,
On the island we walked the 7km road to the end and came back on the hilly path via the Signal Tower.
You can keep your Greek islands, your Caribbean islands, your Canary Islands...this walk is the most stunning, most beautiful, more peaceful, that I have ever done . The scenery, the sea, the views...all amazing.
Its so good I am going back next week, for another spin and walk before that old cabin is gone forever.
Ireland at its very best.

This is an old cable car & the only one in Ireland. It travels many metres above the sea over the sound across to Dursey Island, so this a unique experience not to be missed! The island itself has very few inhabitants at this stage, as most have moved to the mainland. It's a lovely place to visit with fantastic panoramic views back towards the mainland. You can walk the whole island with time to spare for a picnic too in a short day, so start early for the cable car as they can only take between 4 & 6 people at a time (dependent on whether a group is together or not) Highly recommend, but there is absolutely no shelter, so make sure it's going to be a dry day.

Great experience going in the only cablecar in Ireland, only 6 people allowed inside but plenty of room, takes around 15 mins travelling over the ocean with fabulous views, the island is beautiful, different walks both long and short available to do or just stroll at leisure as far as you can go. Small ruins with graveyard there which is interesting, not a lot to see there except the magnificent scenery, I would throughly recommend it. The queue is long in the afternoon to get back off island so be aware you could be waiting an hour or more to return. Islanders get first dibs on cablecar but the gentleman we met allowed us to go ahead of him as it was turning cold and We'd waited an hour so we were very grateful.

What an experience!! A short but amazing trip across open waters to an amazing island, full of history, wildlife and most importantly, pace and quiet. So worth a visit and so much more to do around the area.

The cable car is €10 per adult return, there is plenty of parking there and also 2 toilets at the cable car station. We visited on a Sunday in July and we were only waiting about 30-40mins.

Bring cash as they do not accept cards, also there is usually a food van and ice cream truck which only accept cash and when you get to the island, you can take a mini bus tour for €6 single and €10 return which is also cash only. There are no facilities on the island so bring food/ drink if you plan to stay a while.

We walked right out the road and returned on the mountain path which boasted beautiful views of the island when it wasn't covered in mist and the surrounding areas.

Well worth a vist.

Delightfully old fashioned and rickety single car that links the mainland to Dyrsey Island.
The cablecar only takes six at a time and it takes 5 or 6 minutes to get over, the same back so I'd there are queues you may have a long wait. You can't pre-book so go early and they only take cash, there are no tap or credit card facilities. Its €10 return for adults.
Bring food and water over to the island as there is nothing over there in this regard.

We were somewhat put off going having seen all the reviews about queues. We went on a Wednesday and waited for only about 20mins going over and no queue on the way back! We walked up a trail to a peak on Dursey and had amazing views all around. A brilliant day out

My husband wanted to go to Dursey Island on the cable car for a long time but anytime we were in the area the queues were really long, so you have to plan the timing carefully. We were staying 2hours plus away in Baltimore, but he was willing to make the drive directly to the spot in order to get across. When we arrived at 11.30am we were told an approx 45 min wait, so great (we thought)....turned out to be 1.5hours as numbers were very limited & a local turned up & had priority. The man in the office was very polite & also sanitised the cabin a couple of times when it returned. It was a lovely clear & sunny day but there is absolutely no shelter if the weather is bad. There are loos which are ok (have seen worse) When we eventually got to the island there were fabulous views in all directions & we had a short walk for about 30mins, but we were conscious another queue could form on the way back so didn't delay too long as my husband was just very pleased we got there.
