Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Exceptionally unprofessional and rude staff. Unnecessarily aggressive towards customers. Average bar. Wouldn’t recommend.

Stay far away from here. Awful place. This used to be a great bar one time. I’m not sure if there’s new management. But we found the Scottish guy at the door really rude. The bar was dead (even on Saturday night). They’ve killed the place. We won’t be back.

One of the best bar's in Cork, has a lot of character and a friendly warm vibe. Great on a Sunday afternoon. Recommended!

Wanna blow off some steam in Cork, especially around 10pm all the way to 4am the next day? Then this rowdy and often riotous historical pub is for you. I ventured in a bit early after arriving @ Moody's Cafe by bus about a mile away and found the worn red tuck-and-roll booths nostalgic. Our apartment was a half-block away on Main Street and I expected a wee bit of noise. But the avalanche of cursing, shouting in multiple languages, bottles breaking, and expletives from passing gangs continued for 6 hours. Sleep was nearly impossible.

Popped in here last night Saturday with my family- the door person (Scotish man think his name was Dave) was amazingly helpful finding us seats and having the craic with my parents
My Dads in his 80s and poor on his legs- rather than him using the toilets up stairs he kindly suggested the bar next door and escorted us to a lower level toilet all with a smile on his face and with great banter.
Amazing service and greatly appreciated
The bar its self was right up our street with lots of rustic charm - busy but the other patrons were all lovely

Great pub. Make sure you get a pint of Beamish! and a Porn Star. Cork is a great town on Southern Ireland

Visited here recently with family, we were totally blow away with this pub, it's over 100 years old, and has all the charm of that Era, it was like going back in time.

We all enjoyed the delicious Beamish, we had to considering, it used to be brewed a cross the street.

It's got a great selection of drinks, local craft beer on tap, huge selection of spirits.

If you want something different to the usual big pubs in the city Try it out.

It's an old world pub steeped in local history, with lovely friendly staff, each of the staff were genuine nice people, eager to look after customers.

Looking forward to going back for delicious Beamish by a cosy fire.

Well done to all involved.

The Oval Bar refused to serve me because I have a medical condition. Yes, they actually said that to my face. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION.

I went to another bar and they were happy to serve me.

I will NEVER go to The Oval Bar again. I will not be treated like vermin simply because I suffer from health problems.

I was so pleased to support the Oval reopening in the pandemic but what a disappointment....myself and my friend were so looking forward to a relaxing, no hass eve. We ordered the vegan boxes and each of us had 4 natcho chips per 8 dips. What a nightmare! We asked the waitress about it and we were offered some dry ole gluten free crackers from behind the bar. It was so cramped my friend asked of th err was a spare stool and we were told No. Eventually a nervous fella rocked up with a bill with guinness and ale we hadn't ordered with a bill we didn't owe. It was amended but once we paid we later couldn't order a drink with the waitress with short black hair yet the other was going to let us order. I also didn't take too kind to the fella on the door telling me I looked like a doctor. Erm...It's a pandemic...We all wear masks. I will not return anytime soon!! Disappointing!!

There is a wide age range group drinking here but no teenagers as it operates an over 21 policy. This, for us, is a real plus for a city centre bar. There is an old time feel to the place with its many nooks and crannies. You can visit here on your own and read your paper or book. The beer is good and the staff are most pleasant. If there is a downside the toilets are up a number of flights of stairs but then it is an old style Cork bar. That aside it is a favourite and well a visit.
