Saint Fanahan is the patron saint of Mitchelstown. 1400 years ago this warrior saint built his abbey in Brigown (literally “Smith’s Hill” which is quite near where the well is located).. The Holy Well is situated where three streams meet, which was considered a very sacred space in pre-Christian times. Therefore, it is reasonable to suppose that prior to Saint Fanahan’s tenure in the locality, it was a place of Water Worship.
The well is accessed primarily from Mulberry Lane, by a three step stile. Half a mile (approx) of a path, straight as a die, on a double banked ditch leads you to the bridge. At this juncture you turn left and the Holy Well is clearly seen.
There are many traditions associated with the well. In decades gone past, cures were associated with the healing properties of the water.
Saint Fanahan is revered in the locality. His feast day, 25th November, is observed as a special day. The novena prior to this feast day is observed by many faithful in the area to this day. Rosary is recited at the well at this time and an annual mass is celebrated in early summer. The path is lit up until midnight for a couple of weeks around his feast day. There is a horseshoe shaped path around the well. Traditionally people “did the rounds”, travelling around the path near the well three times, praying each time between rounds at the well.
If you are in the locality this is a very special place where peace and tranquility are evident, every season of the year.

The 650 metre long path to Saint Fanahan's Well is entered from Mulberry Road. The walk is peaceful, easy and enjoyable with views of the Galtee mountains to the north. Beech trees line both sides of the surfaced pathway which is raised on a bank above the surrounding fields. The little woodland at the end of the path is approached over a pretty stone footbridge. The three little streams that surround the well give it a sense of being "away from the maddening crowd". There is an excellent sculpture here by Ken Thompson who is regarded as one of Ireland's finest sculptors. There are a number of interpretive signs explaining the history, traditions and natural environment of the site. All in all, if you're looking for something in Mitchelstown then this is the place to go.

Well worth your time to find and visit if you are passing thru Mitchelstown. The lane can be hard to locate, I drove past it several times and had to ask 3 locals before finding it ! Its on Mulberry Road so stay there till you find it ! Interesting fact is Mulberry road got its name due to the thousands of Mulberry trees planted there by the English to make silk ! Pleasant walk down to the well, where you can sit and contemplate your sins !

It is one of the nicest walk you can do around Cork City. It is near to Douglas which is the most sought area in Cork as it is havinv direct connection to city centre via public transport.

a wonderful peacefull place a small walk down to the most quant area with a well.... not to be missed if in mitchelstown

Wonderful place to visit especially if nobody else is going there. A place of quiet contemplation. Enjoy the walk down to the well.

We made a brief stop in Mitchelstown to visit the place where my father-in-law was born & raised. We did not know anything about St Fanahan’s Well. Our guide & genealogist, Seamus Fox, told us about it & suggested if we had the time it might be a good place to visit. Well, he was certainly correct. Thank you for the introduction to St Fanahan, the beautiful peaceful walk along the causeway with cows to the right of us & cows to the left of us!! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us. I’m still not so sure about those 7 sickles though. We took some quiet time to say a few prayers, blessed ourselves & drew some holy water from the well to take back home. St Fanahan, pray for us!

My son Lir was in hospital for a week due to a bad infection. He was two and his sister was three. She later confessed that he was annoying her so she pushed him into the well. The following day he was in perfect health. I have great faith in ST. FANAHAN
