Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Many people rave about the English Market, not least the guidebooks; but I wonder how many of them use it as regularly as I have? If you're a once-only (or occasional) visitor to Cork, first impressions are positive, not least because of the range and abundance of what's on offer. A little familiarity enables you to get under the skin of a sense of entitlement by some of the stall-holders (maybe that's inevitable given the Market's name?).

This afternoon's visit perfectly illustrates what I mean. When the person selling cheese can't be bothered to engage with the customer, and worse, seems to know nothing about the provenance of the product, you begin to worry. The complete absence of bedside manner when buying olives tells me I need to find another outlet. Asking for a specific product in an international grocery stall seems to elicit bad-tempered impatience. Quite a lot of people trading here want your money, for sure; but they give every impression that they don't need to work very hard to get it. If this was France, customers would simply vote with their feet.

There are good outlets in this market (bread, especially, with people who care about what they do; the same with fish - and many of the butchers' stalls). Lunch in the farmgate cafe upstairs is invariably very good. A pity that what is genuinely good is spoiled by a minority of people whose demeanour suggests either boredom or indifference. Too many overgrown kids running stalls, lacking interest, and killing time before getting out to the pub.

Compare it with Limerick's superb Milk Market on Saturday & Sunday mornings and you'll see what I mean. Passionate people, who want to engage with their customers, offering quality fresh produce, at much more democratic prices, with greater variety (the Indian guy selling home-made curries and samosas is a hero) and a smile on their faces. No bored students filling in here wishing they were somewhere else.

We had read that we should stop at the English Market when in Cork. Well, we were driving through Cork and decided to stop in. We walked around for a little while, and headed out... empty handed.

Gorgeous market filled with good food and fresh ingredients! Lots of great things to nab as souvenirs or gifts! Great to walk around and people watch. Nabbed a Brie and turkey sandwich from one of the food stands and it was AWESOME! Definitely worth the stop and loved this place!

The English market is an amazing place with wonderful food. Anyone who has a shred of understanding of how markets function would understand and appreciate the market for its quality, history & culinary experience. From reading the previous review by Beachgoer1983 you’d hope they’d stay on the beach in future as their lack of intelligence of how a market does business and sells their produce is so far from the greasy cheeseburgers they’re obviously used to!

Loved the market! Great place great experience. I’d highly recommend it!!

I was so looking forward to visiting this market and left rather disappointed. I’m not sure what I was expecting but here is my opinion for what it’s worth.

Pros
- A lovely bakery and cheese shop right in the middle. Very sweet employees.
- Clean and large produce stand to the left at the entrance.

Cons
- Most of the shops were the same things
- Huge seafood selection but the odor was overpowering.
- Very crowded and hard to move around

Glad we went but will not return. So many other shops right in the area to see.

If you like good local food your must visit this market. This is a market in the old style that were once in every major town and city in Ireland and the UK. The food offering is first class and the quality was excellent. Thee were also lots of stalls selling really nice treats too.

Our awesome tour guide realized that we are such curious tourists! He said I am going to take you to a littke visited spot—the English Market. Such amazing fresh fish and meats. We met the fishmonger whom Queen Elizabeth had invited to dine with her. One of the absolutely most amazing experience we had inIreland

We visited this market on our weekend visit to the historic city of cork in June .it’s really great to see markets like this still operate.they have all the produce one can buy.also all goods are fresh ..it’s a great education for the young ones to have.
The best bit for us was the fresh fish traders there.
It’s amazing the choice of fish available.
