- Gillian BDublin, Ireland22 contributionsInteresting and entertainingReally interesting. Good price. I recommend getting the audio tour if going solo, gave a lot of information, it was quite entertaining. Staff were friendly and helpful. - it is an old gaol building so can be cold during winter. - Steep-ish walk to the gaol, so recommend a taxi for anyone with breathing issues after exertion.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 January 2023
- eva-diva1029105 contributionsMust Go!This was such a fun and interesting place to visit. So much history packed into this building. It reminded me of the Alcatraz tour in San Francisco. I will say that I was a bit disappointed in the halloween decorations that they had out up. There was a scavenger hunt they were doing for the kids which was awesome, however the skeletons and ghosts kind of messed up the aesthetic of my photos.Visited October 2022Written 8 February 2023
- Melanie S14 contributionsThe jewel in Cork's crownI don't know why but I expected a lot less of an experience when we started the tour. What an amazing a day we had! The staff were unbelievably friendly, the gaol itself was incredibly evocative thanks to the personable stories and the historical restoration. It is close to the city centre and easy to find. Definitely a jewel in Cork's crown. Highly recommended.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 April 2023
- Patrick DDublin, Ireland9 contributionsExcellentExcellent. This ranks with Crumlin Road in Belfast and Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin as a historical prison representation. The stories in the cells illuminate the imposing building and the ability to wander in the surrounding grounds provides an additional impression. The self-guided audio tour which I took finishes in the mock-up court room where, after the visuals commenting on the prison's history have completed, two wonderful songs play, which alone make this place an essential visit. Immense and powerful both lyrically and physically. Well worth a visit.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 July 2023

Visited after catching the bug at Kilmainham in Dublin, and whilst not on the scale, it was definitely better presented, with more interactive exhibits.
All told, the tour took around an hour, definitely walk around and see the debtors gaol, and visit the Radio museum at the top floor

Worth the uphill walk up to this. Spent a while wandering round and reading about what had happened here. The statues were a little creepy but really added to the experience walking around

Interesting visit to the Cork city jail from early 1800s until 1923. The audio guides and exhibits give an honest portrayal of what life was like for petty criminals and political detainees who ended up in this facility

My girlfriend booked a guided tour of the Gaol on my birthday trip to Cork, because I have a great interest in Irish 19th Century crime and punishment.
Our tour guide Shaun (Sean/Shawn, apologies) was just brilliant. He kept us informed and interested throughout.
It differs from Gaols I’ve seen elsewhere, with fascinating stories of a variety of inmates and staff. While it is obviously very difficult to understand what it would have been like as an inmate, Shaun’s tour took us close.
I wholeheartedly recommend the guided tour of the Gaol.

Once you have seen one jail, you have seen them all. Nothing of particular interest - nothing rather notable and for what was shown, did not really show value for cost of admission price

People recommended visiting the gaol and I really enjoyed it. I booked online and you have 2 options when booking online: you can get a guidebook with or without an audio guide or a guided tour. I chose the guidebook and the audio guide. I really got an insight into what life was like back in the 19th century. It’s not expensive at all and it’s well worth visiting. It’s around 5 mins driving distance from the city. I hope to visit again and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Loved visiting here. Just the perfect amount of information provided to guide yourself around the site. We hopped off to visit here from the 24hr hop on and off sightseeing bus which worked so well.

It was brilliant - friendly helpful staff and lots of info to take in. We just did standard admission with no tour or audio guide, just the leaflet and signs on the walls, and it was still perfect. Learned a lot. Also… when having a walk around the grounds afterwards we saw a puma running through the trees… the legend is true

Can I get to the gaol on public transport from the city centre
CorkCityGaol
Cork, Ireland
Hi bredamv
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately the buses are on strike at the moment. You can get the Hop on Hop off bus which stops right outside the Gaol. If you wish to walk from the city centre it would take approx 30 minutes. Thank you.
