I went kayaking with 2 of my friends in Lough Hyne and it was a breathtaking experience. My friends and I came from Australia and we got the dates wrong when we drove so far to get to Cork, so we contacted Atlantic sea kayaking and a nice man Jimmy got back to us allowing us to join the group that night instead. What a legend as we were stressed from the long drive haha. But it all worked out and we had an amazing time seeing the little flurries of light in the water. The bioluminescence was so cool, the starry sky breathtaking and the whole night was serene and magical. The two tour guides were amazing, friendly, funny and true little fairies. I loved the twisted folklore legends too haha. Overall it was a wonderful experience and something I won’t come to forget. 🧚

This was an absolutely astonishing experience and we will remember this for the rest of our lives. We were fortunate enough to be the only kayakers booked on so it was just us and our guide, who was very knowledgeable with excellent craic, and an absolutely cloudless clear starry sky. We started by gently rowing around the lake in the double kayak looking at sea urchins and the wildlife. As the sun set the stars got brighter and a playful young seal came and joined us. By an hour into the trip it was hard to tell where the lake ended and the night sky began, all the stars seemed to have dropped into the beautifully still water. The bioluminescence started as sparkles as you dipped your hands in the water, but by the end of the trip it was visible with every splash as we rowed around. Absolutely unbelievably beautiful.

Well, I got to do a bucket list item I didn't even know I had. Went to Catlehaven Bay for a night kayaking trip with #atlanticseakayaking . Weather cleared out an hour before we started. The views were amazing. The guides told us some history of the area and about the cliffs and towns. But the main event? When it finally got dark at almost midnight, we got to see the phytoplankton in the water! Only a few places in the world you can see this happen. I didn't realize Ireland has the Gulf Stream. We splashed the water with our hands and paddles and it looked like magic was flying from our fingertips. It was little sparks. I was in the last boat with one of the guides, Liam. We saw the bioluminescence at a few spots, but one time when we came up to the rest of the group, our boat became surrounded by the phytoplankton due to the others stirring them up. I screamed with joy, "They are all around us!" Sparkles were everywhere. Thousands of lttle flickering white lights were surrounding us. It was so bright and magical! At one point, the guide dipped his paddle in the water. As I watched, I saw a whirlwind of light around his paddle. As we rode through the water, you could see little lights flowing in our wake. I grazed my paddle on the surface and more "sparks" were seen. It reminded me of sparks from welding or when metal skids on the ground. One actually ended up on our kayak and others were dragged upon on the beach by our boats. You would see them flicker a few times. Like a lightning bug. No cameras were allowed, so I have done my best to describe what I saw. Truly one of the most beautiful sights of nature I have ever seen.

Paddling into the night is an experience unlike any other. As the darkness fell across the water, a sense of tranquility washed over me.
The silence was beautiful broken only by the gentle lapping of water, a chance to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature. The bioluminescent a sprinkle of fairy dust in the water, added a touch of magic to the already amazing experience.
Our guide Declan had a deep understanding of the area and shared great stories and insights of the local area helping to create a
beautiful connection with the natural world. It's an experience I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a unique and unforgettable adventure.

Absolutely amazing experience doing the night tour on Lough Hyne. Both guides Ciaran and Mike were exceptional, they made us feel very safe and were quite knowledgeable about the area while also being entertaining. Getting to see the bioluminescence and see the stars on a clear night was a truly unforgettable experience, would do it again in a heartbeat!

2 hours of bliss at Reen Pier! We are more or less beginners. The guides gave clear and thorough instructions before we got in the kayaks. They supply waterproof pants and jackets, as well as buoyancy jackets. The two guides were charming, and one of them gave very interesting information in the history of the area. The other guide ensured we stayed well away from the rocks. We went down the bay, beautiful scenery. Absolutely wonderful.

Unmissable night kayaking trip!
What a fantastic experience, if you get the chance just go. The bioluminescence was something I’ll never forget. The instructors, Oisin and Naoise were great, we were in safe hands. Not only was it a kayaking trip, we learned about local history, the ecology of the area and about the bioluminescence.

We spent a wonderful evening on the water. The setting is spectacular and the kayaking is a fun way to immerse yourself in nature away from our usually hectic lives.
Our guides Oisin and Naoise did an amazing job bringing everything to life... nature, history and science. I loved the stories of the people and history of the area which left me wanting to explore and learn more.
We did experience the bioluminescence which came as a an added bonus but it would still have been a beautiful and memorable evening in West Cork regardless.

Magical trip to a most beautiful place. We were looking forward to this trip and it didn’t disappoint. Declan and Kirk were wonderful guides who were incredibly knowledgeable and made the trip so interesting. Moments of stillness and mindfulness added to the experience and memories of this wonderful night will stay with me for a very long time

Thorough enjoyed our night kayaking on Lough Hyne. Guides were very patient, informative & reassuring throughout the tour. As a novice I was put at ease from early on by the guides. The pace was slow with a serene, tranquil atmosphere. Overall an enchanting & surreal experience that I would definitely recommend.

Coming mid October is this still available at that time?

Did you go on the Lough Hyne or the Reen Pier Castle-bay. My friend and I want to go to the one that has bioluminescence.

Reed pier also has bioilluminescent plankton!

Hey guys, Really want to book this and heard between April and Oct is best time.. any difference between early aug and early sept? I know it can’t be guaranteed but still... Thanks in advance.
Written 7 January 2019
Hi,
Thank you for your enquiry. There is no prominent difference between August and September. Either time would be beautiful!
Kind regards, Alice
Written 21 April 2019
How likely is it to see the bioluminescent plankton in early October (5th-10th)?
Written 19 September 2018
You may want to consider emailing the company directly for details related to temperature and whether October may change something. A clear night and darkness is what is required, but I can’t speak to if the air/water temperature may impact that.
Written 19 September 2018
Is this something we need to purchase tickets in advance for? And, if so, how far in advance should we do so?
Written 19 August 2018
Hi Kat,
Thank you for your enquiry. Pre booking is essential for our trips. In the summer months, we usually recommend booking two weeks in advance for weekends to avoid disappointment.

Hi! Would this be a bad idea for someone who is prone to motion sickness? I’ve never been kayaking before, and it looks like it would be an incredible experience, but unfortunately I’m terrible on boats and fear it may be the same situation for me in a kayak. What do you think? Thanks so much for your help!
Written 17 July 2018
I would imagine you would be completely fine if you’re just going out on the lake anyway

Hi do you offer kayaking to children accompanied by an adult? My 10 year old son is keen to try it and we are in the area between 30th June - 3rd July
