I had planned this years trip since last year. I go every year but knew this was a once in a lifetime trip 100 years since Michaels assassination. I would highly recommend this place and the many more places close by if you have any interest in Ireland

Having been to the M.Collins Centre earlier, we had a better understanding of the ambush that occurred on 22 August 1922. To stand in the place where M. Collins was when he was shot, to look over the hills and the roadway (ok - it looked a lot different in 1922, then in 2022) and imagining the chaos. This is a place for lovers of history. Unfortunately the Memorial was under construction, but that is all done now. Not sure if there are picnic facilities and sure a little rain is fine, especially when in Ireland.

The site where Michael Collins, who helped establish a treaty with the UK in the 1920s, was assassinated by fellow Irishmen on August 22, 1922. Controversy still surrounds his death.

I wanted to visit BealnaBlath and the Michael Collins Monument, as well as the Collins Family Farm although I certainly did not wish to drive in Ireland. After much research, I determined most private tours keep to a cookie-cutter route whereas I wanted a more personalized experience. Then to my delight, I discovered Cork born Alan Noonan, PhD in Irish History and he took me to these places and more. So if you are interested in a private, customized tours of Co. Cork of important historical sites and/or places of great beauty and cultural interest, contact Alan Noonan. Alan allowed me to view and enjoy stunning scenery, out of the way bucolic villages, and fascinating historic sites, as he regaled me with entertaining stories with an in-depth knowledge that only a local expert possesses. Alan was generous with his good humor, time, and knowledge. He ensured I saw everything I wanted and much more. Thanks to Alan, I was able to visit among the most important historic sites in Irish history, such as Michael Collins birthplace, BealnaBlath, Kilmichael, and Crossbarry ambush sites, as well as a famine village, castles, and much more.

If you are into Irish history this may be a place you wish to visit - it is where Michael Collins was shot - so steeped in history - but nothing more than the monument to see - the area has been landscaped over the past couple of years and parking has been extended so on a normal day you should have no issues with finding parking...

Béal na Bláth is where a simple Celtic Cross marks the spot where the course of Irish was changed forever.

I visited Beal na Blath, the site of the ambush that saw the death of General Michael Collins in 1922, on the same trip as a visit to his homestead near Roscarberry and the Michael Collins museum in Clonakilty.
The site at Beal na Blsth is marked by a memorial cross across the road from where Collins was shot by anti treaty forces on that fateful day.
It's a beautiful memorial, erected I think in 1924. Almost 100 years have passed but what happened here on that terrible day is still a profoundly important moment in Irish history.
The ambush site is signposted at the tiny crossroad hamlet of Beal na Blath, about a 4 minutes drive out from Longs Pub.
Every Irish person, whether they agreed with Collins on the treaty or not, should come here if they can and pay respect to a great Irishman and patriot.

Expected more from such a famous site, it is literally just the cross you see in the picture, even signage to it is very poor, no seating area beside it or any kind of amenity.

This is a very moving site . There is a good stone cross erected across the road from the place where Michael Collins was shot and killed . Trees have been allowed to grow along the bank of the small stream where he died but one can clearly get an idea of this tragic event . There is a lot to be gained by travelling up the road from the village of Beal na Blath ( the direction in which his convoy travelled past the site in the morning ) and then down the road in the direction of the village and towards the Cork and Dublin roads as he travelled in the afternoon and met the ambush . I met a family from Canada ( father and son ) called Long also visiting the site at the same time as I did. It is notable that both the youth who gave the alert of the convoys arrival to the ambushers ( Denny Lond ) and the landlord of the small pub in Beal na Blath ( now called the Diamond Bar ) had the surname Long and the father of the two I met told me his family had been RIC officers and where hiding explosives in their home at the time of the assassination and judged it wise to emigrate to Canada soon after the sad event . Something here for historians ?
