What can I say! Where to begin!? I have done the planetarium tour numerous times, both Solo and with my Leaving Certificate Physics class, and every single time, I manage to learn something new. The atmosphere as you first enter is mysterious, and yet as the tour progresses you go from dark and mysterious cinemas to interactive learning experiences to incredible views of Lough Mahon.

I have taken tours of the castle also to see the history behind it, and it never fails to amaze me. Having gotten an inside look at how the castle operates by doing a week-long work placement there also made me appreciate the work done by the staff. I had the good fortune of even seeing the observatory, which is genuinely incredible, and the journey up to it through winding, steep staircases is wonderful. The workshops set up for the kids are incredible and help teach about our cosmos and other, interesting ideas!

Overall, it has always been an incredibly versatile and educational experience, and I would always recommend it to anybody looking for a historical, scientific and FUN day out!!

(Also, keep an eye out for Blackrock Castle Observatory open on Cork Culture Night!!)

Lovely tour to do in Cork

Went to the Observatory today and had a great tour. The young guy (Can't remember his name) but had long brown hair and a beard. He was brilliant. He was enthusiastic and incredibly knowledgeable on the history of the castle and showed a genuine interest in space and his role. I would encourage people to visit and help support Irish business during this time!

We spent a lovely morning at Blackrock Castle. We joined the guided tour which was interesting, informative and well organised. The tour involves going up circa 80 steps so not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

Blackrock Castle is a fortification located at Blackrock, about 2 km from the centre of Cork city on the banks of the River Lee in Ireland.
Originally developed as a coastal defence fortification in the 16th century to protect upper Cork Harbour and port, the site now houses an observatory, visitor centre and restaurant.
Open times are 10-5pm and timers cost 7€.

A true gem in Cork and well worth a visit to see something different with dedicated staff. The planetarium was amazing and well executed and the tour was done with a competent and clearly passionate staff member. Excellent interactives and gauges for all ages. It’s such a wonderful organisation and asset to Cork. Well done to all!

Saw a glimp of Blackrock Castle in the RTE TV programme “The Music Makers” with Rory Gallagher back in May 1972 and just had to see the castle for myself...

Every person who wanna a visit Blackrock don't go with children under 10 years old we find very hard from city centre with 202 bus and inside it's more attractions with good guide but it's very tumultuous inside. I don't suggest for old person with locomotion problems.

Went with two kids this morning. Was expecting the normal this is such a group such as plough etc etc instead got an igloo with a brilliant guide and a totally different tour of the sky’s in the month of September He was well able to answer the kids and followed with a history of the castle
We ended with the interactive shaming the plant which we managed to almost blow up
Great fun. Even the oldies were able to manage
