- Patrick ACork, Ireland3 contributionsAs a local, it doesn't lose it's charm. What can I say! Where to begin!? I have done the planetarium tour numerous times, both Solo and with my Leaving Certificate Physics class, and every single time, I manage to learn something new. The atmosphere as you first enter is mysterious, and yet as the tour progresses you go from dark and mysterious cinemas to interactive learning experiences to incredible views of Lough Mahon. I have taken tours of the castle also to see the history behind it, and it never fails to amaze me. Having gotten an inside look at how the castle operates by doing a week-long work placement there also made me appreciate the work done by the staff. I had the good fortune of even seeing the observatory, which is genuinely incredible, and the journey up to it through winding, steep staircases is wonderful. The workshops set up for the kids are incredible and help teach about our cosmos and other, interesting ideas! Overall, it has always been an incredibly versatile and educational experience, and I would always recommend it to anybody looking for a historical, scientific and FUN day out!! (Also, keep an eye out for Blackrock Castle Observatory open on Cork Culture Night!!)Visited February 2021Travelled soloWritten 20 February 2021
- Johniseven21 contributionsExcellent tourBooked this online as we wanted an indoor activity given rain was expected. As it turns out, the sun was out, but you should still go, whatever th weather. Castle is lovely and the tour was one of the best. The guide was great, he was very informative and gave us a full history of castle, we got to walk up 87 steps to top of castle to see the onservatory telescope (not allowed inside as very expensive equipment), with great views. Then down to basement to the gunnery room and finally to the planetarium. This wouldnt be your traditional planetarium lookng up at a dome but there are banks of seats and a scfeen. Nonethess, very cool. What made the tour was the guide, phd student on astronomy. He was excellent, in terms of knowledge, friendliness and humour. There were many people with alot fo questions on space/planets and he handled them all without any fuss. Aside, there is a restaurant in the courtyard (indoor and outdoor, best to book) and a nice lunch can be had afterwards. Highly recommended.Visited August 2021Written 22 August 2021
- JillCork32 contributionsFull of interest and good coffee!Signage to Blackrock Castle is non-existent but the Castle was well worth the hunt! Lovely café and an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable. We found the hour far too short a time to take in the exhibition as well as the "planetarium" and will return. The tour costs €20 for up to a 6 person pod.Visited September 2021Written 23 September 2021

About 8 months ago, Blackrock Castle came up on my husband's Windows screen. I realised I would be nearby in Sept 2023 and resolved to visit. We absolutely loved our trip to the Blackrock Castle Observatory. The setting was spectacular, the staff friendly and informative and the exhibits interesting. We had brunch at the restaurant first and it was delicious, catered to our dietary needs and was a really great start to a wonderful morning! Thanks!!!

the whole experience was better indicated for school students and children rather than adults as it is not possible to have access to the observatory itself and the guided tour show you only few part of the castle and very little things of all the observation or reserce done in the oservatory.

Very enjoyable trip to Blackrock Castle. Our tour guide Adam was very knowledgeable and friendly. All the staff we encountered were lovely! Loved going to the top of the castle and down to the ‘cellar’. My kids aged 3&6 enjoyed it also! Definitely recommend it to families- a lovely day trip in cork!

Lots of room for improvement!
Arrived at 11:45 for a pre-booked midday tour. A distinct lack of signage on arrival meant we weren’t the only confused visitors as we searched for a reception or check in. The gift store was closed but a staff member inside indicated we should wait outdoors. We assumed for our guide, in the absence of any other direction or instructions. At about 12.05 our guide opened the doors (our tickets were never checked) and ushered us into a self directed tour area before rejoining us and commencing the guided tour which involved clambering down some steps inside an inflatable dark dome to mimic the night sky. Unfortunately, the noise of the inflatable means we couldn’t hear a lot of what the guide was saying inside. We saw some images of the night sky and learned a bit when we could hear. The second part of the tour was some random historical facts about the castle before climbing down steps to the gunnery and finally to the tower top to hear about the observatory (no entry) and admire the views. No encouragement to visit the gift shop or cafe on exit. Really disappointed given the costs. Could not recommend to others unfortunately.

I took my 2 Spanish students to see this.the guide really spoke far too fast for them and other foreign visitors couldn't understand anything he said.he wasn't very distinctive either.he just wanted to get it all over and done with.
When we went into the dome it was the same thing..very disappointed for them and others in the group.

This is not a a planetarium. Just be aware of that if a planetarium is what you are visiting for. Guests are brought into a small inflatable igloo structure and shown some open access software simulation of galaxies, constellations, etc, on the ceiling. That's fine, but to realise that this was the extent of the planetarium aspect...what a let-down. The rest of the tour is about vaguely interesting but ultimately random aspects of Cork history which have nothing to do with the planets, except that Cork is on a planet, I suppose.
PLEASE, Ireland, do better with your museums and facilities. We are returned emigrants and everything is so parochial and half-assed. It's depressing.
The restaurant is superb though. Beautiful food and very very sweet and helpful staff. Booking in advance seems helpful.

We spent about three hours there, we looked at most stuff and did the tour and show. We didn't use the cafe. It would be a great way to fill half a day or you could rush round it in about 45 mins.

Does Blackrock ever present indoor classical music concerts? Does Blackrock have a movie theater screen to show photos of space?
FoxWynne
County Cork, Ireland210 contributions
As far as I know, there has never been an indoor music concert. It does have an auditorium of sorts with maybe 30-40 seats, and a side room used for workshops, but although both have projectors and screens, they are quite small.
However the end of the museum is often adapted for weddings, launches and similar events, so if one were looking to host a concert it might be worth asking BCO.
