Interesting ruin, originally building on site from 1140 AD and the ditch/moat still there - really interesting and even better it’s free!!

A derelict but superb Motte and Bailey castle
May 2021
This castle was much bigger than I expected and many of the walls are still in great conditions. It is one of the best Motte and Bailey castles.

Worth a visit.

Great place to visit as it’s free and kids of all ages can scramble around to their hearts content. There are information signs to explain some of the history and what the various spaces would have been. Very interesting and straightforward to find!!

Duffus Castle Review
Aug 2020
This is an old location, obviously, and it doesn't have a sexy gift shop or shiny museum attached. What it does have is an interesting history, some lovely views and ideal placement if you are holidaying in Moray. If you time your visit well with the sun (we do get it this far North) your photographs can be stunning.

Lovely bit of history

We were driving past so stopped to explore, a nice little castle, loved the building that is almost vertical, few nice bits to explore for half an hour and good views of the surrounding areas.

A Castle with character
Aug 2020 • Family
With two youngish children (13 and 11), getting them to go, and enjoy, anywhere involving historical artefacts and events is generally a tough audience but with the weather on our side we spent a pleasant 90 minutes exploring Duffus Castle.
The weather was good, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves to discover the 10th Century ruins.
As we arrived two Tornado’s flew past, which added to the experience.
The site is very photogenic and ultimately i think the kids quite enjoyed it.
It’s free too!

Winterfell
Jul 2020 • Family
Stand in the middle of this fallen castle, close your eyes, imagine it rebuilt and you are standing in Winterfell.
Stark (!) buildings against a stark grey sky. There is a certain awe to this place.
Throughout the ruins there are well placed signs describing what you are looking at and it’s purpose.
