About
We are a museum set in Cameron Square which is just off of the centre of Fort William High Street. We have eight rooms packed with fascinating objects, from treasure from a shipwrecked Spanish Armada galleon to the bagpipes played at Bannockburn in 1314. Whether its archaeology, natural history, Commando training and weaponry, Highland crofting life, costumes and charms, Victorian times, silver, coins and medals, or even the history of mountain rescue, it can all be found at the West Highland Museum.

Eclectic mix of local history
Aug 2021
The West Highland museum is a rather old fashioned one with an eclectic mix of objects, largely in dark wooden cases. There was sufficient interpretation, especially around the period of the Jacobite rebellion. As it’s composed of a number of small rooms, they have a carefully marked one-way system in operation, and are most fastidious about recording your details on entry (and the time of your exit).

Worth stopping to view this museum.

This is a very interesting museum with a great deal of information and equipment laid out in what is deemed to be a small space. One way system in place. Very interesting stories depicting past hostilities and progress through the last 300 years or so.

Well worth a visit and will return in a couple of years to see if improvements could be made to what is already a mine of local history. Well done to the staff in its presentation to all.

Lovely volunteers and lots of information in the 8 rooms. Really enjoyed the museum and it was free which made it even better! Lots of great exhibits with lots to read.

Fantastic place. Full of great history. Staff kind and full of information. My son with additional needs was made most welcome. My father an ex royal marine loved seeing the commandos display. Book to go first thing at 10 when quieter if your child has additional needs. Are steps inside to second floor so not sure if your child has mobility problems. They are a charity and rely on donations. Please give in the boxes around the exhibits. Small shop too with lovely gifts and books. One way system and lots of hand gel dispensers.

This is a must when visiting Fort William. It’s on the high street where the Bronze Ford is, it’s much bigger than what I expected and wish I had more time because it was fascinating. We received a lovely welcome upon arrival and guided into a great exhibit about military training, there were also bits about the bronze Ford, the old fort and even Queen Victoria and Albert and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s death mask. Scottish tartan clothes and dolls and animal taxidermy and it’s free to visit but donations are welcome. The gift shop is brilliant too, great books and posters and bits. Would definitely be first on my list when visiting Fort William again!

Great Museum, very informative, shame facilities not open

We visited this museum and thought it was a great little museum with lots of information regarding the commandos, Jacobite rising, massacre of glencoe plus much more. I booked a time slot which was very easy by email. It is very well out together and worth a visit. Unfortunately I had to cut my visit short as toilets not open which is really ridiculous if museum open.

Fascinating glimpse into Fort William's turbulent past!
Well worth a visit though at the moment they prefer you to email or telephone to book before visiting. It's still free but they don't get much funding so there's a box to make a donation if you wish.

Cannot thank the volunteers at this museum enough, they are so knowledgeable and made the experience so much more enjoyable. Children can have a trail to follow, but there is enough there to keep them engaged, it's fascinating... Such a large collection and beautifully displayed and described. Wonderful.

Although it is quite a small museum, there are loads of interesting exhibits.
There are sections on the Commandos and the Jacobites.

Great way to spend a few hours!

We visited the museum today and were lucky enough to be walk ins. The museum has rigid COVID measures in place and feels very safe. Entry is free which is always great!
The museum documents 8 different areas in history and is very interesting. The exhibits are interesting, of a high quality and well presented. There weren’t many people there so we were able to take our time and read everything. The route leads out to a well stocked gift shop and the staff are very friendly.
If you’re in Fort William for a trip we’d definitely recommend giving this place a visit, and if you can afford it, a donation to make sure it stays open!
