If the weather is as kind to you as it was to us then this is rare treat of wide-open spaces, mountains, sea, island views and lochs. Accommodation in some arts could be in short supply so it might be advisable to book ahead

Did an extended version of NC500. Ended up with 1200 coast line miles in Scotland plus 700 to start and finish. Started off from Stirling Perth - The black watch castle Perth - Scone palace Dundee Glamis castle Dunnotar castle Cullerlie Stone Circle Peterhead Fraserburgh Cullen Elgin On this section the roads were pretty much dual carriage ways. Peppered with average speed cameras. There are some nice spots on the way but not big fun of it. If you have plenty of time to kill add to your itinerary but don’t feel bad if you skip this. Between Elgin and Inverness there are lot of beautiful walking places if that’s any interest to you. Inverness Rogie Falls – add extra time for walk if you like nature Dunrobin Castle John o' Groats Dunnet Head Dunnet Bay There are some nice places but still meeehh for me. To me the beauty starts from Tongue Smoo Cave Kinlochbervie Kylesku Bridge Drumbeg Viewpoint Ullapool Well most of the roads in this section are single lane with 2 way traffic. Some places 25% gradient, lot of blind spots and terrible road quality. You get converted for prayers in no time but it worth it. Glad that there were little traffic at this time of the year. Could stop ever so often in the middle of the road to take pictures and carry on. Corrieshalloch Gorge Nature Reserve Laide Inverewe Garden Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve The Torridon Eilean Donan Castle Between Ullapool and Sky 4WD drivers did not seem to get the concept of the passing points. They see you in the distance, they ignore passing points at their side than force off your road car from the road because they were ignorant tw@ts. Within half an hour 5, all day 15+ nowhere else experienced this… Going out to Isle of Sky. Dunvegan Castle & Gardens The Quiraing The Storr Cuillin Hills Fairy Pools Armadale Castle If you like hiking there are several must go places in the above list. Ferry to Mallaig = You will need to reverse into the Ferry!!! :D like reversing into a trailer. Fun :D Follow A861 towards Glenuig, Resipole to Corran The Ferry to Corran was broke so had to add extra coast miles to the journey but it was beautiful to see Ben Nevis from a different side. Glenfinnan Viaduct Ben Nevis Barcaldine Castle Oban Follow a 816 for more coast miles and from Lochgilphead follow on A83 to Glasgow. Don’t forget to ENJOY!!!!!!!!!! and share your route ;)

Arguably one of the best road trips in the world! If you are looking for stunning landscapes, fascinating history, endless horizons, ancient castles, golden beaches and crystal-clear water, all wrapped up in a 500-mile road trip, then the NC500 is for you. We toured this route in just 7-days and this is the perfect amount of time to do it again. Here is a run down of our 7 day itinerary - Day One - Inverness to Dornoch Day Two - Dornoch to John O'Groats Day Three - John O'Groats to Thurso Day Four - Thurso to Durness Day Five - Durness to Scourie Day Six - Scourie to Ullapool Day Seven - Ullapool to Applecross And here are the best sights that you simply cannot miss out on - - Falls of Shin - Dunrobin Castle - Dornoch Beach - Whaligoe Steps - Castle Sinclair and Girnigoe - Duncansby Lighthouse and Stacks - John O'Groats Signpost - Strathy Point Lighthouse - Skerray Bay - Coldbackie Beach - Smoo Cave - Handa Island - Kylesku Bridge - Ullapool Harbour - Falls of Measach - Sheildaig - Bealach na Ba Pass - Applecross - Ceannabeine Village Trail

Decided to finally do this due to current COVID situation. We were not disappointed!. Drove on some amazing roads and stood in awe at some amazing scenery - good weather helped. The only advice we would give is be careful on hotel choices - we had a couple that really were not in line with their website/Booking.com and, whilst it didn't spoil the overall experience, it is worth spending some time checking hotel reviews before booking. A must do!

I can not recommend this road trip enough. We had the best time and found ourselves in awe of the stunning scenery - particularly on the west coast. Book in advance if using B and B’s. Back a day and already planing how and when to go back and revisit the west in spring.
