A bit of an average pub. Nothing interesting on tap. Being winter, the beer garden was re-purposed with a HUGE tv screen. I could see it from inside, it lit up most of the interior of the pub. Not that nice really. Great discount for students, great in the summer if you want a big beer garden in the city... More

With a range of comfortable sofas the Pear Tree is a relaxing venue for a cheeky afternoon pint of beer.

Good area in the open, however in this cold in Edinburgh, you cant stay out for more than 5 minutes. Inside, it got very very crowded. Not sure why they allow so many people if there is no space. The beers are good, and staff is decent.

Visited this pub during the fringe and received the worst customer service. Took friends along who were not from Edinburgh and was embarrassed at the service we were given. One friend stood so long at the bar that the person behind her had to point out she was next in line and had been waiting a while to the bar... More

Came here many times during the UEFA Euro 2016. Visited a lot of PUBs across UK from London to Manchester to Liverpool to York since I'm traveling but this is my favorite PUB. A lot of people came here to watch the game. Their food (burger) was actually good and a lot of selection of drinks here in a reasonable... More

So many busy places during the festival, but the staff here were very efficient and even though busy. The beer choice was good and there is a good selection go beers at a reasonable price.

All the Pear Tree is really famous for is having the onyl decent sized beer garden in the centre of town. Unfortunately this means that it is at capacity when they sun is out but lifeless and quiet when it isn't. Decent choice of beers but it just lacks something when the sun is away

Visited during the fringe where an array of musicians graced the outdoor stage. Lovely setting for a few chilled drinks in the sun.

Great bar on south side of Edinburgh. It has a massive outdoor area which is great to relax in the sunshine, free singers providing entertainment also. Loads of acts during August. Bar is pretty standard, average prices. The real selling point of this bar is their courtyard. Large number of picnic benches so normally no issue getting a seat. Various... More

On a lovely day sat out in the beer garden after our visit to the Fringe it was packed but managed eventually to get a seat, there was a burger bar at very reasonable prices at the time we were there a few bands were playing on stage a very enjoyable afternoon.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
