My friend Laila and I took the most exquisite trip to the Highlands with our crazy-funny-friendly-tour guide ANDY C! I honestly think, if it wasn't for such a fantastic tour guide we would have not enjoyed the brilliant and amazing scenery or trip half as much. He was very entertaining and our jaws hurt laughing for 3 days straight! His... More

I cannot say enough about our tour guides Colin & Paul. They both were extremely knowledgeable and great sense of humor. I learned a ton about the history of Scotland, England and the Romans. I will be back for more of their tours and would recommend them to anyone. Thanks a million!!

Recently we asked Heart of Scotland Tours to arrange a private tour for members of our family visiting from Southern California. One of the visitors has motor neuron disease and largely has to use a wheelchair to get around, but had come with the prime objective of seeing the Great Glen of Scotland. We had a great four days --... More

My family took a tour today with the Heart of Scotland Tours to Stirling Castle, Loch Lamond & Glengoyne Distillery. It had been a long time since we enjoyed ourselves on a tour as we did on today's! Our driver, Iain, was not only extremely knowledgeable but probably one of the most entertaining tour driver/guides we've ever had. From the... More

My wife and I are travelers. We have been on several guided tours all around the world. I believe what can make or break the experience is the guide who leads it. With that being said, I have never had a guide as knowledgeable and charismatic as our guide Iain. The trip was amazing and the information was vast. We... More

The whisky tour is jammed packed with fantastic stops in this beautiful country. Make sure to get the 2 tastes at the distillery. And if you are lucky enough to get Iain as your tour guide, you are in for a real treat. He made the day fun, entertaining, and informative. Highly suggest you book with this company.

I had a short trip in Edinburgh and I am so glad that I took this trip which I've learned so much of Scotland! The tour guide, Iain, was incredible and funny. We had so much fun and laughter throughout the trip. The history for these places were interesting and of course the views are superb!

My boyfriend and I just took the 12 hour Loch Ness, highland bus tour and it was incredible. There are a lot of options for this particular bus tour and we weren't sure which to go with, but figured that a smaller bus would offer a better experience, and we were so right. Our tour guide, Andy, was extremely knowledgeable,... More

My friend and I were lucky enough to do the Loch Ness (Tour 1) tour with Andy. He was a wonderful guide, providing some very interesting and insightful Scotland history and trivia on our way to the Loch. We stopped at some amazing places and loved getting to take pictures of all of the sites Scotland's highlands have to offer.... More

We had a very short visit to Scotland and don't typically enjoy tours, but chose to do the Highlands tour that also went to Lochness, because if you're going to Scotland you might as well see the most well known place with the people who know it best right? The Highlands were some of the most beautiful scenery we've witnessed.... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
