My wife and I booked this the day before and arrived at the meeting point. We were greeted in a friendly manner and directed to the nearby pub. There the introductory talk happened - with a bit of interaction. We moved on from there to other pubs and were regaled with stories of the great Scottish writers of the past.... More

Enjoyable hosts act out and recite the literary greats of Edinburgh across a 300 year window from Ramsay, Burns & Stevenson to today. 25 minutes of walking up and down streets with adequate breaks and pub stops. Makes for a fun night. Recommend eat before you come...unless you are a late eater.

This was a very disappointing experience for us as we booked the tour well in advance and were very excited about it. Unfortunately the tour was cancelled on the day we attended as only 4 people showed up and we were informed the tour is only viable with 6+. We were instructed we could come back, so we returned two... More

Dear RuthLewis26, I'm really sorry to hear of your experience with our tour. Most tours are well attended but occasionally we do have to cancel if too few people show up. Those times are rare, and I'm afraid you were just very unlucky to experience it twice. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing in advance that a tour will... More

I have been looking forward to this tour since last time I was in Edinburgh (was unable to do it as I wasn't in town on the right night). The tour was quite nice, although there was a stop at Ensign Ewart that seemed rather unnecessary as we didn't discuss that pub- it just seemed like a pit stop. The... More

The tour was varied, exciting, really interesting and also quite funny, we visited a lot of bars and historical spots in Edinburgh. The tour takes like 2-2.30 hours.

If you know something about Scottish literature, you have to go - you will enjoy the story and walk through Edinburgh by memorable places. If you know nothing about Scottish literature, you still have to go - you will enjoy educating part of the tour. Even if you don't want to know anything about Scottish literature you still have to... I went on this tour with a group of friends and it was absolutely worth the money. You got a lovely walk, and very interesting commentary on the colorful history of Edinburgh. Very entertaining!

What a great way to walk around the city at night. To think that you are having a pint or whiskey in the establishments where the great literary figures of Scotland once wrote and drank. Our tour guides were great entertainers and put on a wonderful theatrical performance highlighting Edinburg's famous writers and poets. A great way to spend the... More

Great Thursday evening tour with our two tour guides. Started our evening off at the pub across from our hotel. Very energetic guides with great local knowledge of the history of Scotland. A great way to get to know Edinburgh. You should take this tour if you have the time. Enjoyed by all!

My sister and I had a wonderful time hearing the banter between the guide and the 'learned interrupter'. The walk between pubs gave us an opportunity to see some sights off the Royal Mile. The guides' knowledge of poetry, poets and history was clear as they shared and 'argued' their way through lines and laughter from the poets of Scotland.... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
