About
It’s not everyday that you stumble across a pub hosting daily live monster shows. As daylight fades and the twilight hour approaches, this famed Edinburgh venue’s spooky spectacle combines lights, music, sound effects and an animatronic Frankenstein monster, which descends slowly from the ceiling. There’s truly nothing like it in town. There’s plenty more going on away from the dramatic entertainment, too. It’s a great spot for food, with the freshest produce used for everything from the must try haggis fritters to a range of delicious saucy wings and indulgent burgers. Classic cocktails are a steal at £6.95, slashed to just £3.95 all day if you’re visiting between Monday and Wednesday. Frankenstein is also a raucous party spot. Come at the weekend to find the tables swept away and live DJs dropping the party hits until late, and the pub hosts Edinburgh’s biggest karaoke night on Sundays running from 8pm until the early hours. Frankenstein Bier Keller a perfect venue for holding large groups, private hire events and functions. It follows an Oktoberfest theme with long wooden tables, steins of premium beer and a German themed menu to match! There are a wide range of package deals available to make sure that your group receives the true Frankenstein experience!

Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Went for my nephew’s stag doo. He might be the demographic, I definitely am not. Very noisy and most expensive beer. It was just before St Patrick’s day so perhaps there was a surcharge on beer even.

Really poorly kept beer and glassware. Everything looked and felt a bit sticky. Toilets smelt like frankstein himself had dropped the kids off at the pool.

Came years ago, it was fab. Now it needs reviving.

We came across this bar on our walk around Edinburgh. We did have a laugh at the big statue outside it.

Friendly staff....there was a great atmosphere when we went in . The decor is so well done it was just like sitting in a move set.

Only thing I was disappointed with that the frankenstein didn't come down that really would have made our date. But wasn't to be. If you want to see what I mean go watch it on YouTube.

I stopped by yesterday evening for some drinks and decided to order a cocktail, my favourite being a whiskey sour. I was excited to see they offered it. This order was responded with annoyance from the tall barman who rolled his eyes at me. Being a bartender myself, of course I understand it is a difficult drink to make so I do appreciate the effort it takes to make it. However, he proceeded to make a very nice whiskey sour which i cannot complain about. I am a slow drinker so in that time, I later went to get a second drink for my partner, this same barman made a snarky comment saying “i made her a whiskey sour and she doesn’t even f***ing finish it”. I did not appreciate this comment being made particularly when i was at the bar and clearly said it where I could hear him. If the comment really needed to be made I would have preferred if it wasn’t made when I was standing within earshot. Other than this interaction I thought the bar was really nice. I loved the drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Although the environment was okay and the staff was nice, the organization is a disaster. We booked a table at 7, for dinner, ordererd at 7:10 and at 8:15 we were still waiting for our food. They don’t have enough staff hired for the flux of people expected and that makes them extremely slow. They take ages to take orders from the queue at the bar and ages to deliver it at the table. More than 1h waiting for a pizza and fries is not a reasonable time.

27/8/22 - Saturday night drinks

We three middle-aged London guys were on a mini pub crawl guided by a local friend who recommended we pop into this bar after the Library Bar and Fringe Show.

We found the converted church to be packed on the last Saturday of the Festival/Fringe at around 9.20. We found it very entertaining and busy upstairs. Our host told us about the performance at 11 and then took us downstairs to a much quieter bar with lots of benches and a stage. It was one of the Fringe venues. Our friend explained how it used to be a Frankenstein museum downstairs but converted out to a performance space and bar. We ordered four pints of the barmaid and then heard the bells tolling... the barmaid confirmed Frankenstein was appearing upstairs!

Up we rushed to see the three minute spectacle above in the vast space. Lots of people joining in screaming were enjoying the show.

We returned to find our beers poured and we took a bench by the stage and had a chat as it was much quieter than above. The tvs were not showing the silent Frankenstein films above and there was only one other group returning after the show. Eventually a couple took a table in one of the alcove.

At about 9.40 we were asked to finish as the bar was closing (probably because so quiet and the barmaid was needed upstairs much more).

We drank up and all left the building within five minutes as we could not chat or sit in the busy bay upstairs.

The beer was fine incidentally as were the toilets.

Thanks, TA, for not letting me upload screenshots taken from Video!! I have asked if you can change this situation years ago.... pics are from an iPad I airdropped still too from my iPhone.

Better service, maybe give customers cutlery and don't overcharge, Was very quiet and we ordered 1 x pizza and 1 loaded nacho fries but were given 2 pizzas and fries and paid for them, we were handed the pizza but no cutlery, we had to go looking for it and could only find 1 set which we took and ended up sharing a napkin!
