Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went to this bar a couple of times last year as well as this year. Love the music and beer. Kind of place you have a laugh with others. Great bar.

Love this place!!
As a first time visitor to Edinburgh, I was advised to pop in here by someone who visited lifetimes ago and thought it'd be right up my street....I tried it. Man, it's brilliant. I've been here everyday. Prices are standard for the area, the ale although superb was too summery for my Scottish Winter taste buds. The Guinness is brilliant. The music (although I've not managed to fit a live band in) is petfect. The locals are absolutely lovely and Paul, the barman has been amazing throughout.

Should I find myself back in Auld Reekie, I'll definitely be coming back here.

Service from the first barman was great. Vibe was good with an decent selection of drinks. Not bad prices. Then the creepy little barman turned up. He kept coming and just staring at my partner first from about 3 feet away but then repeatedly from the bar hatch area and made us both feel pretty uncomfortable. The whole time with a sort of smug/quizzical look on his face. It was really bizarre. Maybe the little fella just wanted to know the way to Isengard.

We have chosen to visit Bannermans on many occasions over the years when we visit Edinburg. For the most part the bar staff are very nice and we have always had good banter with them . However the last couple of times our visits have been spoilt by the grumpy girl who clearly has some sort of issues with her own well being and sadly she feels the need to single out other women who make her feel miserable moody and just a very bad attitude because you are unhappy don’t take it out on paying happy punters. Sadly your attitude has lost our custom.✌️

Great for live bands. Staff are very precious about serving alcohol. Accused of being drunk when I wasn't. Go somewhere else more rock and roll... Any other pub really. These guys are jokers

This place is a trip! An must-stop "off the beaten track" pub! Such an eclectic crowd and the live music on the second night was fantastic!

I love bannermans! Been going here since the 90s (shows my age!) and it’s always a good night. Great place to go to a gig and a general great little pub for a pint.

I grew up in Edinburgh and this used to be a good venue. How things have changed for the worse. I asked for an orange juice at the bar, the woman behind the bar looked bemused and then said they don't have it? I then asked for another drink and she suddenly declared "I'm not going to serve you!" I was completely sober and in my 45 years I have never been refused a drink. I then asked to speak to the manager and he said that I appeared drunk and that is why service had been refused! On reading other reviews here it seems that the staff get off on refusing to serve people who don't conform to their view of how a rocker should look. Great way to treat people Bannerman's.

Visiting for a quiet drink on a weeknight before a concert, we asked for one ale and one orange juice at the bar. We were refused service. The server said we looked drunk. My partner had had one beer, and I am teetotal. Being insulted like this for no discernable reason really upset us, and spoiled our visit to Edinburgh. If you are not young and cool do not go here unless you want to be humiliated.

Enjoyed a lovely chilled out night here with great beer and a wonderful Blues guitarist.
The atmosphere was slightly marred however by some squawking drunken tourists who got very aggressive when the barman politely asked them to leave, one particularly vile individual who looked like a plastic surgery gone wrong episode on TV seemed to be the worst demanding his name and that she was going on trip advisor to get him fired....disgusting behaviour especially at this time of year.

I actually came here because I felt embarrassed and sorry for the guy who just took it in his stride and explained they were too drunk to be served and needed to leave. Accusations of anti English flew which was embarrassing as I'm English and had been enjoying all the bar staffs chat that night.

Kudos to the barman for dealing with the situation properly and not losing his composure...their behaviour was rude, self entitled and completely unacceptable.

Otherwise Bannermans seems like a great bar! Warm, relaxed with good beer and great music if you're a rock fan. The move from live blues to Sisters of Mercy on the jukebox was a bit jarring but also a welcome throwback.

Thank you Bannermans, I look forward to returning!
