Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

downstairs lively, upstairs dead
Sep 2021
We had booked a table for an evening meal. Upon arrival the place looked very lively and there was a nice atmosphere. However, the waitress showed us a booth upstairs. There were no diners, other than 1 couple nearby. It was very disappointing. Having booked this place in advance I thought we would have had a downstairs table but that was not the case. The burgers were good, but the noise upstairs from the music coming out of the loudspeakers was overwhelming. And the atmosphere was a wet towel. Quite claustrophobic too, trapped into this booth. This venue is quite pricey but I didn't think it was worth the money. We don't often go out and I think we deserved better. It's not just about food, but the whole experience. Maybe Wednesdays are not the best day.

Come for the pizza, stay for the beer.

Came for 2-4-1 Vegen and Veggie pizzas. There is a good range of options both of Vegen and Veggie but also meet. The atmosphere was relaxed and suitable for kids. The range of beers is as you would expect phenomenal, if expensive. Do ask to try before you explore. Also book in advance.

Good but overpriced
May 2021 • Friends
It is a good bar, but, for me, it's just overpriced. You can find good beers and bits for less in Edinburgh.

We arrived at the bar slightly late but were seated quickly. We were told the kitchen was just closed but they would still take a food order if we wanted one! The staff could not have been nicer! Unfortunately one of the drinks we’d ordered was no longer in stock and some of the other drinks were overpriced… but because of the wait on our pizza we weren’t charge the extra sit in price for our last drink. Fantastic customer service! And would go back!

Safe place for girls
Jun 2021 • Friends
I rate this place 5 stars purely on the basis of the service. My friend and I (18yo) were seated next to a table of older men, and the waiter explained to us that he would be happy to help or move us if we felt uncomfortable. We ended up chatting to said men and the waiter came back to check on us. It was really nice to see that he genuinley understood our concern and made us feel really safe. The drinks were nice too.

Great despite set backs of Covid
Jul 2021 • Couples
Terrific despite set backs. We came in and heard some bad news. Covid had cancelled our beer experience and the ovens were broken. However our excellent waitress made our evening really special and gave us excellent suggestions for beer and cheese and everything in between. Excellent experience.

Most of their beer is brewdog’s own as you would expect. They do have guest stuff as well so you may drop lucky. If not there’s dozens more to choose from.
