Looking for nine single rooms in Edinburgh to see the Military Tattoo was going to be a hard task until a friend recommended the University. We all had a twin room with en suite, comfortable beds and daily cleaning. The breakfast was up to five star standard with fruit, ham, cheese, cereals and plenty of cooked bacon, eggs, sausages, black... More

The University of Edinburgh will always remain close to my heart. It is an incredible University that is world renoun but my brother-in-law was one of the founding professors of the Sociology Department here at the University. He spent nearly 45 years as a founding member of the department, as a lecturer, researcher and fundraiser for the Department of Sociology.... More

Old fashioned university with a lively campus dotted around Edinburgh. Thousands of students come from all over the world to study and contributes to a large international student population. It is renowned for being slightly elitist and pretentious. The old university buildings are impressive and great to walk around and explore.

As a college professor myself, I always enjoy visiting the local university. This campus is nice and has a fantastic large park adjacent to it. It's definitely worth taking a short walk through if you enjoy college campuses and parks. We heard there is a bar on the campus but we didn't see it, but also were not really looking... More

A friend who studies there brought us in, as it is not easy to find the place. I have to say that the prices where cheap, the staff were nice and the atmosphere was ok but there were a horrible smell that invited us to leave the premises before expected.

As you'd imagine, UoE is a massive entity with good and bad elements. Old College is worth looking at. Kings Buildings probably not. George Square is also with a look.

I have been going to Edinburgh University (Studying Sociology) for a year now and its a great university which has some very notable alumni such as Charles Darwin or alexander bell or fairly recently former prime minister Gordon Brown. Overall a 5 star university.

Fantastic university, lot of building and renovations underway which marred the experience slightly. Stay away from the bratwurst stall, we were both ill the rest of the day

Visited the University thanks to a student led tour so I had the chance to visit all the most famous buildings: this place is really full of history!

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
