Only 5 minutes walk from my home, and never visited for years, but wanted to see the new Japanese garden. Absolutely glorious. So beautiful, and peaceful, was not too crowded as mid-week. Now has a little cafe, though a bit over-priced, and the server could have been a little more smiley 😀! However, no complaints as a free place to... More

Lovely grounds, unfenced lake so care needed with children.Did not go round castle, just went to cafe. Small cafe, inside and outside tables, Standard bought in cakes such as millionaire's shortbread, carrot cake etc. Cardboard cups and plates, plastic cutlery. Bowls of water provided for dogs.High chairs provided,no straps. But a lethal step down from counter to inside seating,,very dangerous and no... More

We discovered this place recently and we were enchanted. There were no problems with dogs. I saw a few but they were on leads and everyone was enjoying the space with and without their dogs. I am very surprised that there are some anti dog reviews on the site. I think it is lovely that everyone can enjoy such an... More

The courtyard cafe is now open at weekends. They serve great snacks and soups. We had the carrot and coconut soup and a ham and cheese toasting. Both excellent. The soup came with a hot roll and there was lots of filling in the sandwich and a small side salad. Great value and excellent service. There is both indoor and... More

Having been a regular visitor to Lauriston all my life, I now visit very rarely because of the increasing number of dogs running freely and fouling, what were once safe, clean and peaceful grounds. There was a time when it was an ideal place for young families but is now fast becoming a no-go area for young children. I would... More

Well as a local resource it is really grim to see *so many dogs" running around without leads ,it used to be almost dog free ,now I observe dogs without leads on croquet lawn , children being scared by uncontrolled dogs etc etc...It used to be the case no dogs were allowed and as no one seems to be in... Great place to visit any time of the year, the lovely Japanese Garden is amazing in spring. Great sea views. Don't forget to visit Cramond village, beach and island nearby.

After web site says no need to book, we took the bus from Edinburgh centre which took 40 minutes. We arrived just after 2 only to be told it was too busy so go away. Very disappointed, this was on a Tuesday afternoon where it's also states usually not busy. What a complete waste of a journey. However the view... More

This is a hidden gem and not as high up on the 'must see' list for Edinburgh as it should be. What a fabulous place and the guided tour, hosted by Michael, was small and felt like it was a private visit. The house and furnishings, and the accompanied stories, are fascinating and just a gentle introduction to the history... More
