Overview
More
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

Very interesting. The audio guide gives some great information. What is nice is that you get the information about the paintings and objects but they also tell you how the Queen uses the Palace today.

Stunning property and a great way to learn about Scottish and British history. We live in London and have visited the royal properties here, so this just added to the story. If you like history definitely worth the quick ride out to the palace. Plan...More

This is worth a visit. An excellent audio guide is provided but no photos are allowed inside. I ended up buying a guide book but this was not cheap. Was surprised to find there was also a ruined abbey there.

Again this is a featured attraction of Edinburgh and it is wise to get there as early as possible. We were in the first tour and it was a leisurely stroll through the house without all the crowds. Later we did the gardens and they...More

More places to add to your list of must see spots. Just go there and make sure to see all of this place inside and out you will be pleased you did. We had a sly little midday picnic here too, well worth the visit.

This is such an amazing and well-done historic residence. Plenty of room to enjoy the sights.I would like to go back again. The cafe and tea room was also a nice addition to our day here.

Sparsely furnished and tired looking. The best bit was the display of medals. Although the staff were encredably helpful with access for my disability scooter.

I only went because I could get in for free using my veterans discount card. If I had paid I would have been even more disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful and historic building, with excellent photo opportunities outside, especially in one...More

replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here

About 100m from the bus stop to the main entrance. However you will easily walk a lot more than this when you actually get into the palace, as it is quite large.

Yes. Near the end of the Palace tour you follow the instructions from the audio guide and exit out into the Abbey ruins. You can then take a right after leaving the Abbey exit and walk through the Gardens.
