There were twelve of us visiting Edinburgh for the Scotland v Argentina Rugby match at Murrayfield on 19/11/16. Having experienced the difficulties of finding somewhere to eat on a match day before, I decided to try to get a table booked in advance. I contacted over 10 pubs and restaurants and none of them were taking bookings. Having visited The... More

Popped in here for lunch on a busy Saturday in Edinburgh (22/10/16). Sat at a table and the male waiter was great, explained as we had a child (10) we had to order food, wasn't a problem as that is what we went in for. Then his female colleague came up and quite rudely told us we could only order... More

I wasn't overly thrilled by my experience here. They waitstaff seemed very disorganized and flustered even though there were only 4 tables with patrons. We were told they were very busy and the wait for food would be at least 45 mins. I was ok with waiting. Our food was delivered right after we received our beer. Not sure why... More

First day in Edinburgh and went out exploring. Wanted to go a little off the beaten path of the Royal Mile so wandered down Cockburn St and found the Malt Shovel. Looked awesome from outside. The best thing the about this place was the service. Beer was good, food was just ok. Ordered the Pastrami burger but the waiter can... More

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, with my wife and another couple. We had the fish and chips and burger and chips. All well presented and very tasty. Would definitely recommend.

Really pleasant atmosphere, we sat outside. My partner had fresh fish and chips, the portion size was huge so I had the fish bites starter with chips. Weirdly the fish and chips came with the usual tartar sauce and surprisingly curry sauce. A well recommended pub.

We stumbled across this pub in Edinburgh and stopped for lunch and a few drinks. We were very pleased to see a large selection of real ales which are locally produced. We ordered food and enjoyed a break from the sightseeing. The food was so good we returned the following day. I would highly recommend this pub.

Went in off peak for two meals. Immediately were told 40 minute wait. But, many open tables. Got seated eventually and waited a long time to order and long long long time to get meals. Waited long time to get tab. Place seemed completely disorganized. Food was just ok. Prices fair. Had to order own beverage at bar.

Spotted this place earlier in the day and vowed to come back for dinner. We really enjoyed the bangers and mash and fish and chips. Very good assortment of beer. My husband enjoyed the new Belhaven lager. Our server Paddy was very down to earth and a real pleasure.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
