Once again, we needed a place to relax with a pint after a day of sight seeing. The Malt Shovel looked inviting, and we were not disappointed. Excellent choices of beers and ales. I was happy to find that the Malt Shovel, like almost every other Public House and restaurant we stopped at, made use of cask drawn ales and... More

Spent New Year here and found Kerr & River wonderful hosts. The food and Drink was fantastic and didn't break the Bank. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. We were visiting with friends from St.Helens and we will certainly call back there when we next visit Edinburgh.

Enjoyed a superb Christmas meal here last night with 2 friends and all agreed our meal was amazing and such great value - 3 courses for £17.99! Service was brilliant, not rushed and very friendly. Highly recommend a visit to this pub in Edinburgh's old town. It is not far from all the Christmas markets and Cockburn Street has lots... More

Dropped in for lunch as it's a nice traditional pub. Unfortunately sat in a bench type seat that creaks so loud everybody turns around to see where the noise is coming from. The waitresses was very pleasant and attentive. Unfortunately the food was very poor. My wife had soup which was ok and I had garlic bread which was hard... More

We ate here after spending most of the day walking around and soaking in the sights of Edinburgh. I really enjoyed the steak pie even though it was a lot heavier than the food I'm used to! Never mind, I ate the lot.

There were twelve of us visiting Edinburgh for the Scotland v Argentina Rugby match at Murrayfield on 19/11/16. Having experienced the difficulties of finding somewhere to eat on a match day before, I decided to try to get a table booked in advance. I contacted over 10 pubs and restaurants and none of them were taking bookings. Having visited The... More

Popped in here for lunch on a busy Saturday in Edinburgh (22/10/16). Sat at a table and the male waiter was great, explained as we had a child (10) we had to order food, wasn't a problem as that is what we went in for. Then his female colleague came up and quite rudely told us we could only order... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
