A great through-way if Princes Street is extremely crowded - but only if it's not a bright sunny day (in which it will be packed full of sunbathers -- between the Meadows and these Gardens, you'll find the entire population of Edinburgh takes to the grass on a sunny day!) There are a bunch of lovely monuments to see across... More

The Princes St. Gardens have an interesting history (typical of this city). The gardens are beautiful and a nice place to walk around. Really worth a visit.

Lovely peaceful gardens, very well maintained with excellent views of the castle. If you are not very fit the walking and steps can be slightly challenging!

A beautiful parkland in the middle of Edinburgh. Amazing to walk around enjoying the beauty, knowing that it used to be the bottom of the Nor Loch, which was essentially a huge cess pit.

Plenty of seating, peace and quiet right in the heart of the city. Perfect place for a rest with a coffee and sandwich, play park for young children. Art museum there as well.

If you are walking on or near Princes street you will see the beautiful gardens. It's very serene with lovely little flowers and fantastic trees. You can walk around, sit on a bench or on the grass and enjoy being outside and alive. =) Highly recommended for piece of mind and escaping the everyday rush.

Nice big garden in middle of the city. One side is shopping street, and on the other side garden. Nice to walk around in the sunny day.

From this park, you view Edinburgh city from below, with the old town on one side and the new town on the other side. It is an alternative view (and argubly a better one) of Edinburgh to that from Arthur's Seat or Carlton Hill where you view Edinburgh from above.

If you are shopped out then this is a great garden to walk and relax in.lovely bedding plants and mown lawns. Plenty of places to sit and have a coffee and cake. Its a pity the floral clock is not working or layed out. Well worth a walk through.

Lovely for a stroll with the family, either on the grass or different paths. Ice cream sellers and often different entertainers. Lovely flowers. Nice spot to stop for a rest when you've had a busy day shopping in Princes Street!

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
