One of the beat cities I've ever been too! Very relaxing and the people are really nice. Plenty of things to do! 2 days are not enough, you need a week. Would definitely come back again! Best times to travel is around Christmas or august during the festival...

I have been twice with work this month for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It's a beautiful city. It's a great time to come if you like the buzz and comedy. Arguably, there is too much choice. If that's not for you just come at a quieter time. Travel and accommodation would also be cheaper too :)

Use the park and ride if your travelling by car...get the tram ticket that has inclusive all day-hop-on-hop-off bus tickets...don't go to the well known coffee shops as they're full of students making the most of free wifi and one drink between two ! Seek out the independants and you will be rewarded...don't just keep to the main streets, you'll... More

different style from the old town. Nice streets and buildings. Worthwhile walking around. Walk up and down the hill, there are nice gards on both sides. And I recommend doing the Leith walk - to both sides: to the Scottish Museum and to Leith, passing the botnaic gardens

Breda might be a great place to live but there is little here for the tourist and the parking inspectors are out to get you. (NB Parking signs are complicated and even the locals say they have trouble decipering them.) We spent nearly half a day going from one place to another trying to find somebody who knew how we... 3rd visit during Tattoo and each time it is getting worse. The city is great but there are 1000s of people there and the rubbish in the streets is quite off putting also I notice the alarming amount of beggars in the streets they are on every street corner. will visit again but not in August and something should be... What a fabulous day with our friend and trip advisor Bill Hill.. if you get to Scotland book this fine gentleman to give you the history of the local area..a morning exploring Rosslyn Chapel, lunch near Melrose Abbey with a concert in the town square complete with the local pipe band and finally to stand on the spot where Robert... Just returned from worst weekend ever in Edinburgh with 2 friends. We are all aged over 40 all have good jobs and all dress smart, I can not believe the amount of pubs that would not let us in. Door staff are all rude and totally unprofessional. We also had a very bad meal in Jamie's Italian restaurant. Won't be... More

This is the second time I have visited Edinburgh. The first was with a party of adults. This time it was for a family wedding in Edinburgh and we were taking our 13 year old (v mature) son. We wanted him to enjoy Edinburgh and had given it due praise to him. He was looking forward to it. He has... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
