The area
Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- S HLeicester, United Kingdom6 contributionsLeft luggage is a rip off!Do not use left luggage as very expensive. £7.50 for 3 hours or £15 for 24 hours per bag. Bus station has lockers in three sizes - large costs £12 and we fit 4 cabin suitcases in. Bus station very clean with two members of staff on hand to help. Only downside is you need to pay with cash (coins to be precise but there is a change machine for notes).Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 6 March 2023
- James MIpswich, United Kingdom49 contributionsI didn’t miss my train but other passengers probably did.At about 1130 on Monday morning the tannoy told us to get out of the station by the nearest exit because of an emergency situation. I complied but didn’t go far and returned to the station 10 minutes later when I saw other people entering. The situation appeared to be resolved and I made it to the 12 o’clock train with a few minutes to spare. The train left exactly on time and I wonder how many people who had left the station missed it. An announcement on the train said that the emergency had been because of a fire alarm. Was this a regular fire drill?Visited July 2023Written 11 July 2023

Another train was due in 45 minutes so went to bar to have 1 drink as I waited. 1 glass of Prosecco was £10.40 absolute ridiculous pricing. Definitely won’t visit again.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 August 2023
- OmarRiyadh, Saudi Arabia742 contributionsNot a Very Good Overall Experience.Edinburgh Waverley Station, while serving as a central transport hub, does have a few areas where improvements could be made to enhance the overall experience. While it may not stand out as Scotland's capital's main station, it still offers convenience and accessibility for travelers. One notable drawback is the limited availability of waiting seating within the station. Finding a seat during peak hours can be a challenge, leaving some passengers without a comfortable place to wait. Expanding the seating options would greatly improve the overall comfort of the station. Additionally, the location of the taxi queue, not directly in front of the station, requires a short walk and can be confusing for first-time visitors. Clear signage directing passengers to the taxi queue would be beneficial, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transition from the station to their onward journey. For families with children or travelers with heavy luggage, it is important to note that walking to the city center from the station may be more challenging than anticipated. While Google Maps may suggest a short 15-minute walk, the path can be steep and hilly, requiring significant effort, especially with trolleys and large luggage. It is advisable to consider alternative transportation options, such as taxis, to avoid unnecessary strain.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2023

- spc354528 contributionsDon't count on storing luggage at Edinburgh Waverly StationSigns were not very helpful and late announcement of departure platform for the train to Aberdeen, and another last minute change on top of that caused quite a scramble. Apparently reservations mean nothing on Scotrail!! However the biggest surprise, and an expensive one, was the fact that the left luggage (bag storage) at the station only accepted small carry-on size items and would not take our large bags. Resulted in us having to store our bags at the "Luggage Store" selling luggage in the adjacent Waverly Mall for UKP 12 /per bag/2 hours. That was one time that I did not smile at the "pun."Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 30 November 2023

Everything expensive, really confusing platforms numbers, like platform 1 , 20, and 19 can be along the “same platform” and are really jumbled up, I recommend coming early because it is beyond easy to get lost.

The availability and logistics of getting a Taxi from this station are ridiculous - I was directed to the "new" taxi rank by a station official ( blue refelctive jacket and something like "Station shift manager" on the back) this is a substatial distance from the platforms up and down stairs and lifts and NOT OPERATIONAL - then had a the long walk back to the staion in the rain - taxis in Market street are a hike away from the station and try it with heavy cases - I travel extensively - this is the worst by a long way ive experienced

1st time using Waverley station. Its huge and platforms are on different levels, be prepared, give yourself time to navigate the statio and where you need to be to get on your train. (20 platforms) Female toilets big queues, hate to think what its like on a busy half term or during main holidays. There are 3 /4 exit /arrival points , M and S..Boots..Pret...a book shop...coffee shops...There is small seating area...with lots of pidgeons flying about and walking by waiting foor bita of food..There are signs saying do not feed...but people were ..so what goes in..must come out...so again if you sit down be prepared for poop.

Only fave a 5 star due to the lovely Laura from the travel desk. Normally this is a brilliant station for disabled people but after a traumatic journey yet again on the aweful avanti west coast line, no one was there to meet me with a wheelchair. I walked a little way with my son and then my crutches slipped on an oily concourse amd almost went over but my son caught me, unfortunatelyi twisted my amkle amd ita like a balloon today. I had booked passenger assist and this wouldn't have happened had they been there. So, Laura from the travel desk, you were my actual hero yesterday, thank you 10 times over.

Edinburgh Waverly Station was great! Pass the Keys Renovated 2 Beds flat near City Centre and Meadows accommodation was TERRIBLE. Our family vacation accommodation turned out to be a huge disappointment. What should have been the first red flag is that the lock box the keys were in looked nothing like the photo in the information for the unit and we were fumbling around with several lock boxes trying the code to get the keys. From the moment we stepped into the building, we were greeted by a completely dark hallway that required a flashlight to navigate. Finding our apartment became a guessing game as it wasn't properly labeled, leading us to try our key in multiple doors. Once inside, our spirits sank even further as we encountered an unkempt and unpleasant-smelling apartment with dirty laundry present. The situation worsened as we realized we had to make our own beds upon arrival and clean the place without any cleaning supplies provided. It was clear that cleaners had not cleaned the appartment prior to our arrival. This unexpected and unwelcome task only added to our stress levels. To make matters worse, essential toiletries (toilet paper, shampoo, soap) and kitchen/laundry cleaning supplies were conspicuously absent. All of the oven and burner settings on the stove were rubbed off, thus making cooking difficult, as we are foreigners, and no instructions were to be found in the unit anywhere. There was old food in the cupboards. The final blow was a malfunctioning dishwasher filled with stagnant water, and a door lock which was broken and held together with packing tape, though the lock was eventually fixed in the coming days. The reality fell far short of the advertised amenities and left us grappling with a significant amount of stress, detracting from the precious time we were supposed to be spending on vacation with our children. Our decision to rent this unit was based on its promised features like a dishwasher and laundry facilities, aimed at enhancing our holiday experience. We've made several active efforts to contact the owner through booking.com in hopes of receiving compensation. While booking.com did refund a small portion of our expenses, our request for reimbursement for the cleaning fee, purchased toiletries and inconvenience remain unanswered. The experience has left us frustrated and disappointed.

The station is rather sprawling and poorly signed though the staff are quite helpful. The taxi arrangements are terrible - walking for miles, two separate lifts and you end up in a desolate car park where there are more marshals than taxis and a long wait.

We will be take the airport train from London to the wave fly train station.Howe do we connect with the fast express train to Edinburgh ? Is it close to walk to this fast speed train or is it in a different location
Also we will be going in 2023 May ,and wondering if we can buy tickets to Edinburg on fast train when we arrive from airport in the morning or should we book online?

From Heathrow there are two main rail routes to central London, Elizabeth line (cheaper) and Heathrow Express (cheaper if booked on line). You then need to take the tube to King's Cross for Edinburgh trains. Lumo are the cheaper option, LNER are more expensive. Both should be booked in advance for the best prices. Both have their own web sites.

Hi I'm travelling from Fort William to Peterborough on 2 May 2021, I have 12 minutes to get off the Glasgow train at Edinburgh, find the right platform at Edinburgh for the London train, I
heard Edinburgh Waveley is a massive station, will I be able in 12 minutes to find the right platform? Also scotrail is having industrial action that day and there doing rail track works, so I'm wondering if its too risky that I might not be in time to catch my connection? Be grateful for any advise.

Does this railway station have left luggage facility at this present time?
We wish to leave luggage to explore before heading home. The hotels do not offer this facility under covid restrictions. Many thanks

Is Edinburgh Waverley Station referring to Edinburgh Gateway Station or Edinburgh Park Station or just Edinburgh Station ( names are from Trainline Apps.

I completely understand your confusion. The central station in Edinburgh is called "Edinburgh". It is something referred to as Edinburgh Waverley in tribute to a novel by Sir Walter Scott. Edinburgh Gateway is out near the airport and Edinburgh Haymarket is to the west of the city centre. So, Edinburgh station is the main central station. Hope that helps and enjoy the city. It is truly beautiful.

we’ll be taking the train from Waverley Edinburgh train station on June 28, 2018 at 7:00 am to Bath. Could you please let me know what platform to take? For a first timer, it’s a bit confusing. It looks so big and quite busy. Thank you!!
